Mauser 'A' Base

Does anyone know where I can get the proper dimensions for the rear portion of the Mauser 'A' base as used on the 11MM Mauser cartridge. Max rim diameter and thickness are no problem, but the rebated head and radius of the cut seem to be a mystery. I have been making 11MM Mauser cases and what I have been making works, it just doesn't look like photos I've seen of original rounds. I'd like to get it right. Yea, I know that brass is available from Bertram, but I don't like paying $2.00+ a case when I use several hundred of them; besides I'm retired and have the time and machining capability to fabricate them from 458 Win Mag cases. Any help or leads will be appreciated. Thanks.

    H-EHW,

Here are two things that you can do:

    1) Contact Huntingtons and order one(1) case which they show as being in stock @ $1.85, then measure it yourself.

    2) Contact the Cartridge Collectors Association and post on their forum. They have a number of very intense, knowledgeable people that should respond to your question.

    Regards.

I have never seen a drawing of an "A base" round which gave the radius, but it is quite possible someone at the Int'l Ammunition Association can help you (this is the cartridgecollectors.org). I'd also suggest the European Cartridge Research Association, which is the main collector / research group in Europe - they have a website although I don't have the URL at hand. I'll try giving a jingle to some of my collector buddies in Europe as well. Since you have machinist experience, you may have access to an optical comparator and a single original or repro specimen would give you the answer with a few minutes effort. I'd also try SAAMI.

Hell-er, so far my European pals have come up with four nice dimensional drawings of the cartridge . . . except for the area of concern to you. The query is being posted on some of their discussion boards and web sites to cast the net further. They also provided references to sources where the brass might be purchased, which necessitated an explanation of Yankee thrift! [:D][:D] If you want to send me your email address (mine is tcg25@hotmail.com), I will have it in the event this thread gets buried in the time it takes to root out the information you seek . . . if indeed that ever happens, of course.

Hell-er, here you go, straight from Germany! Bear in mind that the dimensions shown are in millimeters. Let us know how your project works out.

Iconoclast, Thanks so much for the elusive info. I have made several copies, converted the info into inch dimensions and have filed the copies in strategic locations so I should be able to find one when needed. Thanks again.
