Walther P-22 ?

Does anybody own or have shot one of these?
I'm looking for an unbiased opinion and this is the place to get it.
I want this for my Medium A.L.I.C.E. rucksack in case of needing it for quiet hunting. Of course as a plinker also.

Don't get the wrong idea about the "quiet hunting", I don't hunt at all, this would be for an emergency situation.

I have 2 and love them. I have only shot one and it did not feed after my first fire. It's never misfired after around 300 rounds since. Sure, it's not a tack driver - doesn't claim to be. I also have the Gemtech accessory for it for quiet hunting! I think you will be pleased.

A definite second to cbxjeff's response.
I had "never" bought or owned a "composite" gun before the P22, but because of the ease of installing the little Gem-Tech Outback "accessory", I thought okay-let's give it a try.
Not a "Browning Medalist" for accuracy, but it's a winner.
The One and Only complaint I have is, the grip is not long enough even with extended magazine to feel real nice in a larger hand.
AND, no-body and I mean no-body makes any light/laser adapter for the scaled down "rail" system on the little gun.
    Otherwise it's a "keeper".

SC is right about the grip. I have smaller hands and can get only 2 1/3 fingers on the standard mag grip. Anything larger than 22LR would be a problem for me. R9, if you are interested in one with the quiet hunting option, e-mail me. My local dealer is running a special.

    Rugerniner,

If it's not too late, stay away from them far away. Quoting myself from:
    http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=49432&SearchTerms=walther,p22

quote:The Walther P22 is a pc of crud. Just had a guy bring his into the shop sunday. The take down lever which is molded plastic, won't hold in place after 300rds. The gun likes to disassemble during firing.
He also had the hammer spring on his break after 100rds. Complained to Walther they sent him 3 replacements. 3! Not a good sign.

Not just a fluke, we've had two other walthers that have gone back to the factory. I didn't realize that walther was being made by taurus.

Stick with ruger, they know what they are doing.

A little update the guy is now on his 5th hammer spring. POS!

To quote myself from the old thread Drobs has the link to:

quote:I own one; I've only put 800 or so rounds through it.
I LOVE the way it feels and shoots--when it shoots reliably. I had to do a bit of "tuning" to get it to work "well"--which still wasn't 100%.
The only problem I couldn't resolve was the last round in the magazine often will not feed--I suspect due to a (design flaw) weak magazine spring. Walther Customer Service said there is not a stronger spring available and to just send the gun to them to repair--it's with them now.
If they don't fix it, I'll have to find a new mag. spring myself--I can't find it in me to get rid of something that just "feels so good."
Nothing has broken on mine; it appears to be "pretty hardy." Sometimes (regarding Drob's comments) people break things when they don't know how to handle them properly--the descriptions of breakage given is consistent with "operator error"--somebody used "brute force" where they weren't supposed to.
    Drobs,
Walther makes the P22 in Germany; Smith and Wesson imports/markets them here (they might make some of the parts too). I don't think Taurus is involved. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Update: I finally took time to shoot it this weekend--first time since getting it back from S&W. To make a long story short, I got an email back from Wolff Springs this morning--they are thinking about making replacement springs for the P22. I'll be waiting for the day they start making them; maybe then I'll get the 100% reliability I like in an auto. (For those "hard of reading," S&W didn't solve the feeding problem.)

My Taurus reference was in regards to the poor reliability record of Taurus.

Never had any problems with it so far --> 2300 rounds!
    And I use minimags.
