I really like my Cannon safe. I think it will be a bit above your price range but they have several different series to choose from. Their website is: http://www.cannonsafe.com/

I have one of their Traditional Series safes and really like it. It has an internal, full length door hinge, keypad lock and a great warranty. (Lifetime against damage from theft or fire. Hope this helps.

I also have a Cannon. I cannot remember the model but it is 60Hx24Wx22D. Holds up to 28 long guns with room on the top shelf for a few handguns. You can configure the inside just about anyway you like, more shelves on one side or any combination of designs. I set mine up to hold a few old 98 Mausers that have the really long barrel (hence the shortage of space on top shelf). Mine came on sale for ~$750. I think the regular price was $950. It is fire rated @1200deg for 30 minutes. Lifetime warranty against fire/burglary.

Edit---ALWAYS plan for more guns. Get the biggest you can afford. I wish I had gotten the bigger model.

Always get a bigger one than you think you need. It will slightly extend the time before you think you need another one.

I have 3 thoughts about safes:

    1. As inter said, you won't believe how fast you can fill it.

    2. Read carefully the fire protection limits the safe offers, think
about what a house fire is really like, consider it's real
benifit. True, if half of your house burns (not the half where
the safe is located) you will be looking at just a very few
hundred degrees for a rather short time and the firelining will
    help you.

    3. All the manufactures exaggerate how many long guns their product
holds. Either that or they are thinking of only Marlin 22 youth
models and bumping the stocks is of no concern.

Just my opinion. Others will disagree. I will mention that I learned the hard way - I have 3 safes in the gun room now. My wife thinks my hobby has become an obsession!

Fire proof safes??? I put one of those sprinklers, the kind that goes off when they get to hot, above my safe, a lot cheaper that fire proff stuff, And I bet it would work better, hope I never have to find out.

I have a Liberty safe as my second trade-up; fireproof for 3.5 hours, no exposed hinges, 12 locking rods, keylocking Sargent & Greenleaf type 3 combo dial, 18 gun capacity (there are 26 guns of varying shapes and 14 handguns in it now), it weighs almost 600 pounds and bolts to the slab or wall.
1st one was the smallest I could get, a 10-gun safe from Ft Knox that only lasted 3 years 'fore it was too full.
There's a safe dealer here that sometimes has trade-ins or will call you when the box of your dreams arrives. There might be someone like that near you.
Expect to pay $1000-1500 for a good one.

Check your local classified ads and in the afternoon of the last day of a gun show when they realy don't want to load that safe back on the truck. I wanted to keep it under a $1,000. ended up spending $1,300. on a large safe, the last day of a gun show. The vender knock off $200 + free del, since I lived on his way back to CA. Under $900 is tough, but you never know, someone has a safe that need $$$$ Good luck

Sam's Club has a BIG safe, says Browning on it.. $850.00 Menards has safes and Home Depot.. Remember there is only a few safe manufacturer's maybe 6-7, and they make them for anyone... I have a safe that say's Remington, and I saw the same safe, with Cannon on it. If you get a fire safe, it has less room on the inside. People will get the NON fire safe and put sheetrock or cementboard around it. You will know who your friends are when you go to move a safe..... [:D]

It will hurt you, More than it will hurt me..

Cannon makes a very nice safe for the money!! Moving a safe in not as hard as people think. For moving it the safe around the house or garage just use dowels and roll the safe on them if you are on carpeting or hard wood floors lay down some plywood. The last one I moved was 1200# and was not that hard for three guys. Just think before you jump into something it will make moving it a lot easier.

    0311marine,

Did you put your safe on the upper floor of your house? If so, please consider the floor load capacity. You hope to God that no one is below the safe IF the floor were to give way.

    Just a thought.
