I have an acointance from another forum that ask the following question, I'm hoping someone here can help him.

I need your help. Much to my dismay, I was recently told my quite a few competent gunsmiths, that I cannot fit a scope on my Winchester Model 54, 30-06 bolt action rifle (built in 1925). This particular gun has a very high bolt throw, which makes fitting a scope nearly impossible.

So I was wondering if I could fit some sort of aperture sight instead. Although I hav never used one, I have been told that aperture sights are quite accurate.

I installed a Leupold 3x9x40 using medium rings on my 54. Works great.

There was/is a scope mounting kit for the Win 54 that utilizes the rear sight dovetail. I looked into this when going to put a scope on mine several years ago but elected to leave as is. Very similar to the old Mauser scope mounts, pre WWII. Hope that is some help.

Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.<BR>

your m-54 should have four holes w/plug screws in the receiver (two on top of the front receiver ring and two on the side by the rear bridge) you can find a receiver sight to fit the rear holes. A company also used to make a scope mount to fit these holes (i forget the Co's name) I have a set of these bases but not the special rings for them.

The 54 I recently sold had a Redfield reciever sight on it. The sight was probably as old as the gun.
