hi, i just bought(and sent back) what i thought was a new in box. the dealer said, even after i returned it, that it was never fired. i'm no pro, but i was able to detect a ring, actually 2, one around the pin(primer) and one about the diameter of the shell on the bolt face, and what surely seemed to of been unspent powder in the back of the reciever. i really was happy w/the gun other that i really had felt it had been fired. could i have possibly been wrong? any surefire way to tell 100%? thanks for your help.
ps- it was a browning auto 5

Every reputable manfacture will test fire every gun. Both to Proof it and to test for function. CZ and Weatherby rifles come with a 3-shot test target that the gun fired.
Most likely that is where the marks you saw came from.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

I once ordered a Savage O/U. When I get the gun you could tell that the gun had been shot. I broke the seal on the box at tthe dealers shop. I know that it came this way from the factory. I'm sure almost every maker test fires the gun they release or atleast a ramdon sample.

And if you really liked it, so what if it had been fired a time or two? If a reputable dealer sold the gun as new, it likely was. They are all test fired before shipping.

thanks for replies. i know most of the more modern guns are test fired but did they do that 30 years ago? also, the built up residue didn't look like a coupla shots.
he dog- i was buying as an investment as nib, in my opinion(humble) the value decreases if it has been fired. i also felt i was paying top dollar because it was supposedly unfired. again, thanks for replies, jag

Jag, buying as an investment would indeed make a difference! I just hope you are young and patient. At my age buying as in investment would not make sense. I just hope to shoot them once or twice. Good luck on the evaluation!
