Looking for Disassembly-Assembly info on this type -- maybe a website?. The one at hand is Chinese if that makes a difference. Any info or comments appreciated. Thanx

i bought a yugoslav sks rifle and i showed to a shooting buddy and he said my model was a world war 2 era gun. my rifle shows "mdl 59/66 " on the barrel. is he making this up or is my gun a relic from world war 2?

A couple of years ago, I won a Norinco sks at a FNRA banquet raffle. A friend recently told me the Norinco brands were notorious for ejecting the barrel liner out the end of the barrel after repeated use, and as likely as not, injuring the shooter with blow-back.
Is this problem real, or imagined? Should I worry about shooting this extremely fun firearm?

I know everything of course..wellll, except this:
I just picked up an SKS recently and know squat about military weapons. I'd like to know what I have and an idea of value. For what it's worth, I paid $100.00 for it.

It's the same as the one on auction #3922355 as far as I can tell. Complete with bayonnet, cleaning rod, cleaning kit in the stock, nothing missing, all parts match.
It has the standard clip type mag, plus a thirty round one that came with it.
    Made by Norinco in China
    Caliber 7.62-39
Ser no. 20002963 if it matters
Stock is a bit scratched and nicked, I'll call it 80%
Bluing looks good, but a bit of pitting around the sight hood and barrell end. Maybe 70% for that.
It shoots like a dream, works perfectly.
The gentleman on the auction is asking for a starting bid of $970.00, not getting any takers so far, so I doubt it's in that range, but worth more that a hundred I hope??

Great rifle, everyone needs one. They are accurate, & ammo is cheap.
What more do you want to know? Do a discussion forum search on SKS and you will find tons of info.

I know from my experience these (and I have had several) shoot very accurately with the stock open sights.

I understand that a GOOD scope mounting set-up for these is pretty much non-existent. I say this because there was a posting regarding scope mounts for the SKS not too long ago. If you look back some it may still be there.

B-Square makes one, but the feedback on that here was not good. It was said this holds true with anything available pretty much. Apparently this rifle design just doesn't lend itself very well to being used with a scope.

So, my opinion is that it is probably as good as your unaided eyes (unless you wear glasses) and ability are capable of. I don't know what you are shooting at (targets, game, etc.), so it obviously has it's limitations in that respect. It's adequate for deer hunting (white-tail) I have been told...probably decent for woods/short-to-mid range applications.

The only SKS mount that I ever had any luck with is the origonal Red Star mount that Keng's use to import. It was made oversized and had to be hand fitted to the individual gun. I have had one on a Chinese SKS for about 10 years and it works well. It is so tight that it takes a brass hammer to install the locking latch at the rear of the mount. I have tried some of the other ones that you can buy that the locking latch can be closed with hand pressure, and they have not been accurate. They just don't fit tight enough for repeatable results when you break the rifle down for cleaning and then re-install the mount.

Thanks folks,I've been wondering how it would do on deer.I've kept it as varmint gun all this time(2 legged kind)As far as sighting I like open sights anyhow.Just haven't done nuch with it at all. When I got it the sights were bout where I needed them.I was gone awhile and they have been moved, probubly the ex taken swipes at me.....So i guess I gotta start at base one and sight it in. I will do that search and thanky for the idea,it hadn't accured to me...duh!

Many of hunters have taken deer with 762x39, but I think many more have made a hit and unable to recover their game because the round is too small (my opinion). I'm not one to tell folks what to do, but in my state, your lucky to get drawn for a hunt, even luckier to get a shot, so the last thing I want is an underpowered round. I use to know an excellent web site for sks's, I'll try to find it and get back to you.

Check your rules and regs w/ Fish and Wildlife if you decide to deer hunt your SKS. In MO you have to use bullets that will expand and alot (not all) but alot of the ammo for SKS is FMJ. Good luck.

Take a glance at the ballistics tables in any ammo catalog or reloading manual and compare the 123gr or 125gr 7.62x39 with the
    150gr 30-30win.

You both beat me to it, Ballistics close to a 30-30 Win. I have a couple and I'v never been very good at 400 yrds.or 300 for that matter, unless I was just spraying lead in the air. I have never been able to get a group on paper that I would feel is good enough to use the gun to take a deer with at that distance (400 yards). If you use good hunting ammo and keep your shots to 100/130 yrds. and closer, you will be O.K.

You'v gota kill it to grill it

Here is my .02 cents....... Most people can hit a target with an SKS pretty well to 100 yards, some really sharp shooters to 150-200 yards. Beyond that, I doubt it. I have tried most scope mounts and none have worked well with my SKS, I think it best to use the open iron sights.

I shoot 300 meters with my SKS, friends use it and can hit the target.. On a good day, maybe 14" group and thats with the cheap ammo, WOLF. Never used a scope on it, I would think I could do better with one.........[:)]

No offense intended, but when you take into consderation the velocity of that 125gr bullet, plus the distance what is the down range energy at impact?
It is our responsibily as hunters and sportsmen to make a good clean kill so that the animal is not suffering and doesn't crawl off somewhere to die. Is that 125 grain bullet going to expand properly when it hits the deer at those long distances?
Don't get me wrong, it has proven itself as a military cartridge and many of our servicemen didn't come home because of it.
I've carried mine in the north woods of Minnesota soley for the purpose of a snoop around the woods during the deer season for a possible jump shot but it's my 25-06 that is up in the stand with me.
Another thing I have found with the SKS is that the front sight is constantly snagging in the brush.
