the barrel designation is "m1"

he got them at a police auction. he said it was from the vietnam era distributed to select divisions. he is asking 800.00 for both.

Plainfield Machine Corp made copies of the USGI M1 carbine until 1975, when they were bought out by Iver Johnson, which made a similar rifle. They were never used by the US military. IJ continued to make Plainfield carbines for a few more years. Many USGI parts will not fit the Plainfield; quality varies, but is nowhere near that of a real USGI carbine. If you have problems, you may find that they cannot be fixed, even by a gunsmith.

Value is $200-300, and you are taking your chances.

They are copies and not very good ones at that. Never an issue item, most parts not compatable with GI. I would not value them at over $150 each if in PRIME shape!

Mixed reports on these guns; I now there have been prior threads on these so search some of the old threads. I recall Mark Christian had some good info on these.

I think there were 3 makers, Plainfield, IJ, and Universal. The early Plainfields used a lot of GI parts and were the best of the lot.

In my experience these can bring $350 especially with the wire stock(although you may need an unsophisticated buyer).

If you are really interested in these guns. Tell the guy you want to see them, however you are not willing to pay $800 for them both. If he tells you to come and look at them you know he is bluffing on the price from the gun shop. If he tells you to forget it he will take them to the shop, you lost nothing in my opion.

"They are copies and not very good ones at that" Nonsense. They were the best of the civilian made carbines. They are completely interchangable with military parts and are completely reliable. Plainfield even made some M2 variants. Yep, select fire.
You must be thinking about the Universals that were made around the same time and are for the most part junk.
Ohio's were likely cop surplus and had nothing to do with the military. I seem to recall some cop depts using Plainfields because they were cheaper than a military rifle. Plainfields are regularly advertised and sold, Stateside, for around $300. $800 for the pair sight unseen is too high. Any gun store that would pay $400 each is nuts and won't be in business long. I suspect the guy is BSing you on that.

Look for a Rock-Ola, Winchester, Underood, IBM, or Saginaw. These were wwII M1 carbines. There are others but these are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head.
