I have had a .223 and a 22-250 but I am looking for a long range high caliber rifle. Whats your opinion? which heavy caliber is the best one. I did a little research and the rem 300 ultra mag seemed liked the best one. I could be wrong let me know. Also which rifle? I'm looking at the saveage and the rem 700.

Noseka or Bat receiver, 36" Lija barrel, McMillen stock with Nightforce NP-R2 optics on 20MOA mounts?
Other cartridge choices would be things like the 338/416Rigby Improved, 30/338Lapua, 408ChyTac, etc.
You did say long range (900-1600yd) so a set of Bigeyes (2 Kowa spotting scopes mounted together for use as binoculers) need to be added to the package, along with a quality range finder (the military type, not the "sportsman" type).
You can find out more at www.longrangehunting.com
Kowa Bigeyes
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.
If you ain't got a sense of humor you got no business bein here!
300 win mag is a good one,...but 300RUM walks it on the long hauls. The 300wthby would be my choice before the 300 win mag.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
Got Balistics?
The .30-06, .308 Win or the .300 Win mag, with a personal preference of the .308 Win will do all the long range target shooting you can think of. Although the .300 Mag has an edge at 1,000.
The rifle is irrelevant as they'll all shoot just fine. However, target rifles are a different beast. Heavy barrels and after market triggers are important. As is the very best ammo. That only comes from your loading bench.
Except brown bears of course.

Price is NEVER a factor when used in the same sentence as long range. Neither is factory ammunition. If you truly wish to get to 1000yds, it won't be tomorrow, and it won't be cheap.
1. Handloading is a must to control ammunition variables.
2. A good rest system.
3. Lots of practice,....and then some more.
4. A good gunsmith needs to be contacted also.
If you must use a factory rifle,....look at the rem 700 Sendero and PSS. The savage 12bvs is nice as well,..but I wasn't all that impressed with the new accurtrigger that I used a few weeks back. I am biased towards the 700rem, so take that for what it's worth.
This is not an inexpensive hobby,..but worth every penny in satisfaction.[8D]
