Dual purpose rifle question 6mm BR?

I am looking for a rifle that is accurate, light weight, low recoil and inexpensive [for the quality and accuracy] that can be used on game from woodchuck to small dear [such as found in the Southern U.S.]

I have had a couple of rifles in .243 in the past, the Remington VLS shot 55gr. to 100 gr. fairly well but was very heavy to pack around in the field. The Savage did not shoot as well in that caliber compared to the Remington.

I have shot many kinds of rifles, however, these days I do not have the money to purchase an expensive gun, that is why I mentioned the Remington. At the moment a Remington 700 SPS class is all I can afford, however, a more expensive rifle will simply be a matter of waiting to save money for the purchase. The Remington model 700 LV SF is a very nice and light weight gun, but is not chambered in anything larger than 22-250. To compound my delemma, I cannot save a great deal each month and would like to have a rifle this year.

The 6mm PPC looks almost dead and I do not think Remington continues to produce a gun for the 6mm BR. The BR would be a nice round because of the soft recoil, but is there one available that does not weigh 10 pounds?

The .204 looks like a good round, but is very light and good only on the smallest game, may be coyote at the largest.

Any suggestions for any caliber will be much appreciated.

Danra, currently the LVSF you mentioned is available in limited qualities in 7mm-08 and 308.
I just bought one in 308.
These guns can be pricey but not to the extreme.
Another avenue would be the Remington model 7 or while they are still with us the Winchester Compact.
And you can catch some good sales on the phased out Rem 700 ADL synthetic stocked rifle.
I have seen these things on sell for as little as 250.00.
    I can say this too.
If you can find you an older Remington 600 ,vent rib or Mohawk that is in good condition then you will have your accurate, lightweight deer killing rifle in 243,6mm,and 308.
I own three of them and have killed many deer with them and wont part with them ever.

Why not try a T/C Encore? It can be had in 6BR, it's light & you can add different barrels in the future.

    Mike,

    Thank you for the info.

    dfletcher,

I checked Tompson Center's Caliber Chart and found nothing in a 6mm BR. May be the rifle is an older model. Have you shot this rifle or seen this rifle shot? If so, can you tell me if it is an accurate gun?

If you go to T/C website click on thir custom shop, or check out E A Brown company or www.matchgrademachine.com - they all stock the 6mmBR barrel as a separate item. You'd have to buy the Encore frame only from T/C & add the barrel, very easy to do. I know buying this way is a little different than picking up a bolt action already assembled, but the Encore is pretty handy & it's easy to do.
