Buying Used 870

I'm currently in the market for a 870 magnum for home defense. Found one today in a local pawn shop for $120. What are some of the things I should be looking for when buying a used gun? Not worried about the forearm and stock because they will be replaced. What are some major and small No No's rust, dings, dents, etc.

The 870 is a pretty solid gun. Look for rust inside the action, see if the end of the barrel is knicked up, doesn't ahve too much of an effect on patterning, but lookys crappy. Make sure the barrel isn't loose from the reciver. Other, basic things like rust and dents/dings. Good luck.

for $120, buy the gun, now! use common sence. if the action works and it looks good to you get it. you can always get your money back or more if you dont like it.

Actually, for what you want a fairly worn gun would be better. It will be smoother and easier to operate. Barring physical damage which would be obvious, virtually no one uses an 870 enough to harm it mechanically.

A 870 would have to be in really rough shape for it to not be worth $120.00..........

If you want $120 870 Express shotguns, keep watching the GB auctions. Pawnsplus was liquidating them in large quantities last fall right here on GB. They would start them out at $99 with no reserve! (I couldn't believe it) And they posted excellent picks showing any flaws. I picked up one in near mint condition for a mere $116. That did not include shipping/handling nor my local dealer fees, of course, which brought my true out-of-pocket cost to $156, but it was still a steal. I saw some of their 870 Express shotguns go for as little as the minimum bid of $99 to as high as $141. You just need to keep your eye out. Their only boo boo, IMHO, was that they were saturating the market with them, insteading of just listing one or two at a time. They were listing 5-6 at a crack. Also, of late, it appears that Pawnsplus is selling all their used 870 Expresses only locally as I never see them list that particular model on GB anymore. I'm sure they discovered what a hot little seller that model is. And ABSOLUTELY INDESTRUCTIBLE, for all practical purposes... and to think that ingenious 870 action was designed WITHOUT THE AID OF COMPUTERS!! Hats off to those early Remington design engineers (and to John Browning, as well.)

There is some very small spots on the receiver and barrel only on the right side I'm guessing it is rust, there is no rust inside and the action is smooth, but could use some lube. Will the rust on the gun come off?/ affect the gun?

It's easy to remove small amounts of rust. Take #OOOO steel wool and any kind of gun oil. Wet the surface with the oil, put more on the fine steel wool and rub the rusted areas. Most often, this will be all you need to do to improve the gun's appearance.

offer him a hunsky and enjoy your newly aquired (read stolen) piece. At that price its a steal. Wish I could find an 870 in 20ga for less than $225 here. Looking for a trap gun for my wife.
