Mark christian has told me some info on a gun i am getting. It is a remington pump action shotgun with about a 30" barrel, it loads and ejects from the bottom. It is built just like a winchester model 12 shotgun. This gun is a 12 gauge. I would like to know if this gun is a good shooting gun. I dont have it yet! do any of you have any experience with this guN?

Hey folks. Found this in storage and was wondering if someone could help me discerning what this is. I see the RA on the buttstock and I can verrrrrrrrrry faintly see a 'Remington Arms' etc... on the barrel. Doesn't say gauge but I assume it's 12.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have what I believe is a Remington Model 17 Shotgun. It's a 20 guage hamerless pump shotgun that is underloading and bottom-ejecting. It also has a 20" barrel, which leads me to believe it is the riot model. However, I'm having trouble confirming this.

I've done some Google searches and looked at the Remington link in the sticky message at the top of this page (http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/barrelcodes), but it is referring to a barrel code. There are no serial numbers on the barrel of this gun. On the bottom of the receiver is stamped with "BO" over "4137".

I'm confident this a Model 17, but I would like to find out for sure if it's the Riot model or not. Outside of the 20" barrel, how would I know? Were any other Model 17s produced with a 20" barrel?

I'd appreciate any information or advice on how to find further information?

Below are some crude pictures I took with my phone. I can provide better pics if necessary.

That is a Remington Model 1893 single barrel shotgun, as made 1893-1903. They made them in about all gauges so you would need to check to see if it were 10, 12, or 16.

If you decide to shoot it make sure the chamber is 3 inches long so that it will shoot 23/4 inch shells.(need space for the case crimp)

    Uh, no.
The nominal length of a shotgun shell, 2 3/4" US standard, is the fired length with the crimp unfolded. So the chamber does not need to be 3" long to shoot 2 3/4" shells.
The forcing cone makes it difficult to get an exact measurement, it would take a lot of care or a real shotgun chamber gauge to register the difference between a 2 9/16" and a 2 3/4" chamber.

Hawk Carse is correct. I guess my warning should be that there is a chance that older shotguns may be chambered for shells shorter than todays standard 2 3/4 inch and that you may get into a dangerous situation shooting 2 3/4 inch shells in a shorter chamber. quote:Originally posted by Hawk Carse

It's a Remington Model 3 or a Remington Model depending on whether is extracts a fired shell or ejects it. If it extracts only, it's a Model 3 and if it ejects it's a Model 9. Hammerless in either case, the lever on the left side is a cocking lever.

Flayderman says the button foreend latch is characteristic of the 1893/Model 3. A Model 9 has the more usual cheap gun snap latch.
