Have an old Win 37 single shot and has quite a bit of rust (no pits) Want to remove rust and probably blueing. What is a fair price to reblue by gunsmith? Would appreciteate advice as to products, technique or cheap resource to have done. Want to get in better shape for Grandson. Thanks very much.

There are several methods to do either task. fpr rust removal i suggest very fine brass wool and oil, for total removal, of blueing, use a mixture of sulferic acid and water, use gloves and rinse all parts after, for blueing, i would suggest blue wonder or have it done by a professional.

    Hey Bruce, welcome aboard!
There are several methods to remove rust, but is the gun so ugly that it looks like sewer pipe? Some "patina" adds to value on certain guns, but heavy, flaky rust is not good.
I'd try to remove just the rust first, then judge if the bluing is salvageable.
Spray the entire outer surface (and the bore) with MP-7 gun cleaner and let it soak about 15 minutes, then really get it wet and let it set again maybe 20 more minutes. Then grab that old toothbrush and let 'er rip, soaking while you brush. Repeat until the bluing starts to get shiny again, or you determine that it needs re-blued.
If rubbing isn't your bag; try Naval Jelly. This stuff will remove (eventually) all the finish on your gun with a minor amount of scrubwork-the trick is to get it all over the finish, and then get it off.
In either case, you'll want to coat it liberally with oil after the operation, since both items will remove all the oil on the metal, and will accelerate more rust forming.
Get a look at Brownell's website for bluing solutions (unless you have a PhD in chemistry; don't try to make your own bluing salts), potions and some tips.
    Good Luck!

Thanks for advice, but I did not hear any offers to do it for me. Thanks again, Brucequote:Originally posted by gunnut505

I would try Blue Wonder cleaner before doing anything else. I saw a '92 Winchester that at first had a lot of rust and some blue. The
Blue Wonder cleaner took off the rust and left the blue. It seemed to bring out some blue that was covered with light rust. Gun then looked great. Almost unbelievable but it made a convert of me.
