I called kel-tec and they said it was Cali legal.

Have you asked the CDOJ? I'm somewhat leary too, and I probably won't get a straight answer if I ask..

As things sit at this moment in time there should be no issue with this rifle in California. There is however one SLIGHT problem and that is the states Attorney General has the authority to declare any semi automatic firearm which he deems to be "substantially identical" to a banned firearm an assault weapon under Catagory II of the 3 assault weapons regulations in this state. The SU-16 leans heavily on the AR-15 and appears to be little more than a "civilized" version without the military features. This is all in the hands of AG Lockyer and he is not exactly on our side! Calling the DOJ these days is a TOTAL waste of your time (and mine as well) as they will not give you an answer to even the simpliest questions on firearms laws and regulations. This was not always the case and prior to Lockyer taking control the DOJ firearms unit were among the most helpful folks in Sacramento. These days they simply say that your question is a legal issue and they cannot comment on legal matter...even though they have DOZENS of attorneys at their disposal who advise them on potential rulings and regulations.
