How much upgrade on ballistics can a 1940 Turkish Mauser 8mm barrel handle? I purchased the rifle for the action with the idea of having rebarelled for 300 WM but if I can prove the ballistics with the current caliber, might keep as is.

The accepted max level for the 8x57 is about 90-95% of the 30/06 according to my source which gives you around 2700 w/185 grain bullets. Results will be very nearly identical to the 30/06 for hunting. FYI, the Turk action will require a lot of grinding to handle the 300 win. mag.

Turkish surplus 8x57 ammo is a 154 gr ball projectile at 2900-3100 fps depending on the lot. This is appreciably faster than any 150 gr 30-06 load listed in speer #13.... draw your own conclusions.

I'm hoping to chrono some of the various heavy MG ammo I use in my 8mm Hakims, I use a lot of 196gr rounds that will obliterate anything from bucks to Buicks[;)] You wouldn't want to hop up your Turk too much, the recoil would get excessively brutal unless you put a better stock on it.
