I am considering making an application for this license. Can anyone tell me the ups and downs of having this license besides the obvious fun and expense of the ammo you will go through. Many thanks

You need to do some research.
There is no federal license to buy a Class three firearm or suppressor.
You merely pay $200 to purchase an NFA tax stamp, get your local CLEO to sign off saying it is OK and wait on your background check.
I have just spent some large money on two Colt M16A2 carbines.
Legal NFA MachineGuns have become one of the best investments going for a middle income person like me.

The expense of ammo pales in comparison to the cost of the gun. Check out the prices at www.subguns.com .

At this point you should locate your local Class 3 dealer & have a talk with him. You will need him to transfer any purchase to you. He will not only have stock, but will know the market. He will also be able to tell you whether or not there are problems acquiring a Class 3 firearm in your area. And, he will guide you through the paperwork.

Harleykidd- your first step should be to check prices. Please do this sitting down. Do not check them if you have high blood pressure, a weak heart, or are prone to fainting. THEN check with a Class 3 dealer in your state. The posters before me both offered good advice- but also check and see what STATE laws you will need to comply with- since some states do not permit, or sharply restrict full auto weapons. And check with the NRA (your ARE a member?) about gun insurance- since it is very likely the value of one full auto weapon will exceed what your homeowners insurance will provide coverage for. Good luck, shoot safe.

A renewable federal firearms LICENSE is necessary only for someone who DEALS in class 3 weapons (full-auto, suppressors, short-barreled rifles & shotguns, shoulder-stocked handguns, and destructive devices). A private individual (as has been accurately stated already) has only to apply to the BATF and pay a one-time tax of $200 for EACH class 3 weapon he purchases. As soon as the application comes back approved, he can pick up the gun. Unless your STATE bars private ownership, you probably qualify to own a class 3 if you're 21 years old and can legally buy a handgun.

You also have to get the local CLEO to sign off on your purchase. Here in my small corner of Ohio, the CLEO will not sign under any circumstances. The guys in the next township have no problems getting their CLEO to sign. Best of luck and good shooting -- Steve
