Relief cut in Garand op-rod??

From the Shunshine State [8D],

I'm hoping for an answer about the Garand op rod and the relief cut that is spoken of in most auction descriptions. I'm working on my Garand and the op rod and piston need replacement. Mind you, this is the first Garand I've actually kept to shoot. What is the relief, do I need one in a replacement rod, is it something all good Garands should have or is there a rod without a relief cut in it and is that better the a rod with a relief cut!! Got a picture of the relief cut??

My Garand is a shooter. It will never aspire to be a collectible and parts matching is not necessary.

Thanks again and "watch yer top knot",

The semi-circle to the left of the drawing number is the "relief cut". Early op rods were straight in that area, but some cracked when rifle grenades were fired in the rifle. So, new op rods were ordered with the relief cut, & many existing op rods were altered by the arsenals.

Any op rod will be fine for your shooter, as long as it meets specifications & you don't shoot rifle grenades.

GunHawk: If it is only the gas piston and not the whole op rod,
Brownells sells a relacement gas piston to be installed in the $17.00
range. Part # 878-100-001 (op rod piston head).
