I know one is .30-06 and one is .303 Brit. Is there any difference in strength between thses two? Are the bolt heads interchangable? For example if I had a bolt for a .303 can I swap it with a bolthead from an '06? Also how hard are bolts to come by? Thanks guys.

Bolts between the two of these gus are not interchangeable. The .303 is a rimmed cartridge and the 30-06 is a rimless cartridge. There are other minor differances between the two but I can not recall what they are.

I realize the bolts themselves aren't interchangable, but can the bolt heads be switched, like on the Lee Enfield?

    Bill,
The bolt body on the P-14 and U.S. Model of 1917 are one piece.

"Bolts between the two of these gus are not interchangeable."... that isn't nesessarily true, if you are just talking 'actions' the easyest way to convert a m-1917 to a magnun action for a custom rifle is to replace the original m-1917 bolt with a p-14 bolt (correct larger bolt face and a smaller firing pin tip). as for other differences; the rear receiver contour is slightly different as is the magazine and feed ramps in the undredside of the receiver. Strenght wise they are equal.

Mike: I think you missed the original intent of the post, as did I. Key phrase here being "Bolt head" interchangeability. there is no "Bolt head" as the bolt body on the P-17 and P-14 are one piece. I think he was confusing these rifles with the No.1 thru no.5 design.

No I what i was getting at is if I had a P14 action I wanted to build a .35 Whelen out of, could I have been able to just swtich bolts and headspace to the new barrel. Looks like I would have been SOL. The reason I was asking is because there is a gentleman on the auction side that is selling P14/P17 actions. He makes no differentiation( is that even a word?) between the 14 or 17.

Now whats the size of the .303 case head? Same as magnums cases based on the H&H? Or smaller, and you'd have to open up?

    Bill,

Yes differentiation is a word. And, it's a good thing you asked here because you would have been SOL with bolts that wouldn't fit the receiver you had.

"No I what i was getting at is if I had a P14 action I wanted to build a .35 Whelen out of, could I have been able to just swtich bolts and headspace to the new barrel." ... YES THIS WILL WORK, YOU WILL NEED A NEW MAGAZINE BOX AND YOU'LL HAVE TO REGRIND THE FEED RAILS. THE M-1917 BOLT TAKES THE .30/06 FAMILY OF CARTIDGES, THE P-14 THE .303/.30/40 KRAG/ OR THE H&H MAGNUMS. KIND OF REVERSE ENGENIRING BUT IT WOULD WORK.
