Spray with WD-40 let stand a few minutes then use the 000.

I use Break Free CLP and 0000. It works well with no scrathes and puts down a good coating for future protection.

I concur with Bhavin, WD-40 is a very poor lubricant. Blue Wonder gel cleaner also removes rust without the steel wool, but does not leave an oil base. 0000 brass wool is even softer, if you can find it.

How about Kroil and bronze wool.

    Both available from Brownell's.

Just got done doing some deep cleaning on one of my No. 5 Enfields and was really impressed with how well the Kroil penetrates the metal and cleans it.

Cartridge collectors use bronze wool to clean up old cases because it won't damage or scratch the soft brass. It will work great on a rifle barrel if you don't overdo it.
