    I'm not sure how open Alabama is, you could'nt go wrong with a Burris though. Burris, Leapold, higher end Nikons are all good scopes. We can't just say to you " Yeah this scope will work for you". You need to get down to the gunshop and handle a bunch of different ones. Try friends scopes out on their rifles. Decide what power you need for what terrain you'll be in.

    On the Low end of the price range I would recomend a 2-7x33mm Leupold VX-I for $179.00 On the top end a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8x36mm for $399.00 . The IDEAL "do all" whitetail deer riflescope IOHO should have a Low end of at least 2.5 for thick woods and the Most practicle High ends IMHO are either 7x or 9X for the average "Long shots" which are under 200 Yards. This is Just based on my NY and PA deer hunting experience.DONT BUY A CHEAP SCOPE! you will be sorry down the line......stick with leupold or Burris.

    Been runnina 2x7x33 Leupold on my '69 742 carbine for years and it serves me well in these western VA mountains...

    I lived in va and know the mountain well.Here in south east alabama it looks very much like the foot hills of the blue ridge mountains.Lots of tree farms with cow pastures all over.Lot of fire roads to.Some open flat land but some nice hills.Thanks everybody for all the information.I'll head down to the gun store later this week.As for right now we got one more day of hunting.So i'll be heading back to the tree stand Take care

    I have a Leupold M8-4X on my Model 742 30-06 and it is a perfect match for the rifle.

    Bert H, I didn't think that you owned a Remington gun! I also think that Toolsforfools should put a Swarovski mod.PH 2.5-10x56 with illuminated reticle on his 742! Great clear optics[:D]

    I own a fair number of Remingtons... but they are all modern hunting/varmint guns;

    1. Model 700 BDL 7mm Mag (elk rifle)
    2. Model 700 BDL VS 222 Rem Mag (varmint and casual target shooting)
    3. Model 722 222 Rem Mag (varmint and casual target shooting)
    4. Model 742 150th Year Annivesary 30-06 (deer rifle)
    5. Model 48 Sportsman 20 gauge (upland birds)

    I only own one Winchester bolt-action... a second year Model 54 in 30-06.

    WHAT!!!! That scope probably costs 4x what the rifle is worth. in redhead that scope is 1549.99!! thats probably a little too pricy. I would get a burris fullfield 2 3-9x40 for $199.99. my preference only
