Importing Firearm From Canada?

How can this be done:

A licensed Canadian firearms owner gifts a family heirloom firearm (1937 Win94 30-30) to American citizen C&R holder relative. How can the rifle be transferred and delivered from the Canadian citizen to the American citizen?

If this is possible, does any dealer on the board do this?

What is the process?

Stopped at the border this weekend and the US isde had no idea....said to ask the BATF.

If it has sentimental value, it may be worth the aggravation & expense ($600-800) to bring it into the country.

You will need to pay an importer such as:

They will guide you through the BATF paperwork process. All imports have to go through customs, be stored in a bonded warehouse, & have import markings applied.

Well, I would probably put it in my car and drive it across, or disassemble it and fex ex it to myself...

Honestly, I don't think you need to actually import it, you already own it, and your not importing it for resale purposes. It would be like going on an out of country hunting trip. I had a buddy go to somewhere in south america on a dove hunting trip. I don't remember how he said he took his shotgun with him. I think he either brought it as luggage or shiped it in advance, I can't remember.

I have heard it said that "Catching comes before hanging" and there are numerous ways to get the rifle across the border but Neal Myers has given you the best advice.

If you know somebody in your state with an FFL have them do the transfer for you. I have imported several firearms from Canada for residents of Alaska. Takes several months to get done, but it can be done. As long as the firearm is for a resident of the same state as the FFL holder there should be no problem. It cannot be imported by the dealer for resale unless he has an Importers License.

Forgot to add that as a C&R holder you may be able to import this yourself.

Dont forget, the firearm will be registered in Canada, so the Canadian govermnent will have to know of it leaveing the Country. Check out this site here too for some help www.questar.com

A C&R holder such as this can import it for himself by filling out ATFE Form 6.
