I'm considering buying a decent air rifle for plinking in the backyard it also needs to have enough umph to take very small game. Anyone have an opinion about the Beeman GS 1000?

About two or three years ago, my son, age 12 at the time, talked me into splurging on an air rifle for him. At that time, it was called a Daisy Powerline 1000. Now it is marketed by Daisy as not a Powerline, but as a "Winchester" licnesed product. It is actually made by Hatsun (www.hatsun.com). It shoots hard in .177, plenty to kill squirrels and other small game, it is heavy, feels and shoots like a quality piece, very cool dayglo sites, and very accurate. Sold for about $119.00, and I love to play with it. Shoots pellets only. Looks less exepensive, but not as pretty as that Beeman. His has a synthetic stock.

Buy it at Wally World. Good luck.

    Hi,

Here is an interesting one if you haven't seen it already. It is a Crossman Nightstalker.

    http://www.pyramydair.com/cgi-bin/model.pl?model_id=813

A 12-shot, semi-auto, CO2 powered air rifle is a rare breed. There have only been a few air rifles and pistols that were ever manufactured because the technology wasn't there. These rifles can shoot a 3/8 inch group at 18 yards. A unique adjustable front sight sight as well.

Crossman came out with a relatively decent price for the kit ($200.00) or the rifle by itself ($100.00). I will probably get one for myself.

The only problem is it may not be powerful enough for small game depending upon how small the game really is. The advertisement says these rifles will generate up to 525 fps at the muzzle, but they have been reported in shooting periodicals to do slightly over 575 fps.

    Regards,

    Heavyiron

Everybody has an opinion. I have a 5mm (20 cal) Sheridan Blue Streak. It will take squirrels at 40 meters. At 7 meters it will put 5 pellets in the same hole.

DaBowMan - If you pick one of those Daisy/Winchesters up, I think you will enjoy it. The scope on my son's lasted about 2 hours. Most horrible rings I ever saw. Would not keep the scope still on top of the rifle. I pulled it off, the dayglo sights are, at least to me, funner to shoot through, and taught my son how to shoot through sites. He loves it.

It says it shoots 1000 fps. I don't know, and my eyes aren't that good, but I can't see the pellet coming out of it. Downside - hard to cock for a little fella.

If anybody want a large frame pellet gun for the yard you can pick up a cheap one at a tool sale. If you see one of the traveling tool sales, in my town it is usually at the American Legion, they generally carry a cheap model ($20-$30) that shoots pretty hard and is fairly accurate. Single cock with safety.

Will kill squirrls and cats at close range, 15 yards. However I shot a squirell at about 25 yards, I'm not sure where I hit it but I knocked it off the tree. Then it climbed back up and barked at me awhile. I figured with that much spunk I would just let him go.

Hey Scout5, thanks for the laugh. I about fell off the chair thinkin' about the PO'ed squirrel giving you the what for. The only caution I give you gobbler, is check your local laws as most communities here consider an air rifle a firearm, ie your lucky if they warn you, take your rifle and a court appearance if not. I know, I'm a spoil sport. Some claim the Gamo's are pretty good.

I bought a Marksman 55 a few years ago, it's made in Germany, for $140. I put an RWS 2x7x32 w/ao head on top. It's a great shooter.
