How can you find the age on one of these?

    Good question.

Is the receiver grooved for a scope? If so, that is the second generation.

It is grooved, Does that help narrow it down? Are they pre 64?

Made the model 69 and 69A between 1935 and 1963. No serial numbers. Grooved receiver ads approx. 20% value to gun. Only the 69As were grooved. The grooved ones were made towards the end of this period. Only a little more valuable than non-grooved because fewer were made. -- Don't know how to date one exactly..........[8D]

There isn't a good method to date this piece. The latest guns had the grooved receiver and a chrome plated trigger ,trigger guard, and bolt. the only differences I've noted on the earlier guns is the barrel marking. Like "patent pending" on maybe the earliest, and then "patented" later. I don't know of anyone who has made a detailed study of these sweet little rifles.

As has been stated, there are some production changes that will give you a rough idea on your rifles age.

There is quite an extensive thread running currently on Rimfire Central's Winchester forum on the different markings and features of 69-69As. There have probably been at least 50 rifle's features submitted and recorded. It is the most complete coverage of the 69s that I have seen. Definitely worth a look. Here's the link.

You can have it radio carbon dated! This will get you close, within 1 or 200 years. [:D]
