Dennis, you stated it was clean, but check where the bolt face contacts the barrel. 10/22's get a build up of lead and powder residue on the breech face and in the notch for the extractor. Sometimes it takes some scraping with a pick.
If and when that is cleaned, replace the recoil and hammer springs. It sounds like the bolt is not all the way into the battery position or it's bouncing off the breech face when it's fired. Hope this helps!

If the cleaning don't get it ... suggest you try replacing the hammer/main spring. You can get them from Ruger, but I recommend Wolff. In fact with the high use you've stated I'd suggest a complete spring kit. Wolff's Contact info. is:

After all these years just retire it and get a new one.

No need to retire it. Just get a spring kit and you should be back in business. It sounds as though you may have a week mainspring. Build up on the breach face may be another source of problems as stated above. It is dang hard to wear out the 10/22. I have had mine for about 18 years and the only thing I have done is install a wolf spring kit about 2 1/2 years ago.

The last one that came in with an ignition problem turned out to be a loose barrel. Remove the barrelled action from the stock and check the two screws on the front of the receiver below the barrel. As far a cleaning the rifle, have you ever had the barrel off to do a thorough cleaning of the firearm? Be sure to clean the cut in the side of the barrel where the extractor rests. RJSnow
