300 H&H conversion questions, again.

Looking at a 3000L Mauser in 7 mm Rem.
Wondering if this would be just a barrel change to 300 H&H
Since this cartridge is based on the 375 H&H, would I be correct to think that the same follower in the magazine would work for a 300 H&H, and if the magazine would accomodate the length?

Yes, I am looking for a cheapo conversion to 300 H&H. I missed out on two 3000L's that were in 375 H&H, which have made for a simple barrel change.

Thanks guys.

The only real thing these have in common is rim/belt diameters. The 7mm Rem is a 2.500" length cartridge, and the .300 (and .375) are 2.850". If your action is not currently a "magnum" length action (I've read about people having .375's on the 3000L) then you will probably have a bit more to do than just a barrel swap....magazine length, action opened up, etc...

    Those are case lengths.
I think the 7mm Rem Mag is around 3.29" OAL and the .300 H&H 3.60".
    Check magazine length.

    dpmule,

I had a Mauser 3000L years ago but I deleted it from the few firearms I intend to hang onto. No I don't remember any of the absolute measurements.

I think the easy answer is to ask a question regarding where are you 'looking' at this rifle? If it's handy, measure the magazine and the follower. If it's not handy, ask the seller to do some accurate measuring. Then if all the measurements add up, you have the answer to the question. The only minor adjustments might be to do a tiny bit to the rails for feeding. If they don't then there will be a trip to the gunsmith to work out the kinks.

A 'cheapo' conversion would be use a Remington M700 long action with a magnum bolt face since they will fit and feed the .300 or .375 H&H with the proper box and follower. Another big game style rifle is the CZ 550 in one of these cartridges.

All this for $1215.00 MSRP in .375 H&H. Just change out the barrel and go shoot. I'm sure one of these is available as used also, somewhere in the US.

Otherwise, get one of the new Zastava Z98 Mausers in .375 H&H:

This one didn't sell. Contact the seller and ask to re-list it for you to purchase. This is one of the best bargains you will ever find in large caliber rifles.

    Best.

The 3000L's I have looked at and missed out on in auctions are Left Hand.
If I have break down and get a custom 300H&H done, I guess I'll just have to.
Was just hoping to find a affordable priced 375 H&H Left hand, then all I need
    Is to swap barrels.

    Thx,
    Mule

The last two 3000L's in 375 H&H that were offered on GB auction side just over a year ago by the same seller went for $850, and $725. I missed out on both due to my work schedule. my fault, I should have bid higher in the beginning of the auctions.
And I have searched the other sites religiously since and have not seen another.

I am curious as to why you don't get a factory .300 H&H. There are several on the auction side including Winchester pre 64 70's and a Remington custom classic (the 721 has had the barrel cut and been rechambered to Weatherby).

I have a couple model 70's and a 721 and they are good shooters.

I can't imagine that you would have less in a rebarreled .375 than you would even in an older model 70.

Or are you just hooked on the 3000L Mauser?

Nope, just hooked on getting a left hand bolt gun chambered in 300 H&H.
Have one Ruger # 1 in it, and a Sako Left hand in 375 H&H, and a couple Savage 110's in 270 Win. Just need that 300 H&H bolt gun to scratch the itch.
If they weren't so high priced, I would buy a LH Model 70 375 H&H and re barrel it just to have a M-70 in it. But dang I can buy a used Dakota for what I have seen them go for.

A lefty has limited options in less popular calibers, that's for sure. I say keep looking for that .375 to rebarrel, and it'll fall into your lap sooner or later.
