Renaissance Wax--Pro or Con?

My Pre-64 Model 70's stock really got roughed up this year during the second day of PA's deer season when I got caught in a series of prolonged downpours. Not only did exposure to persistent, heavy rain result in the loss of some of the original stock finish, but the underlying wood got waterlogged in spots. I was discussing this sad state of affairs with a guy I met at a recent gun show and he mentioned Renaissance Wax, a product he uses and claims to be almost a miracle sealant for both wood and metal. There have been a few posts in this forum about Renaissance Wax, but mostly the discussion revolved around how to apply it. I've never used it. I would love to hear from folks who have, specifically pros and cons. If not Renaissance Wax, is there another product that would help protect a gun stock from the elements? Thanks.

I have not personaly used it, I can say that the museum here and several gun and knife guys I know use it on thier guns. I dont know about exposure to the elements, but it does keep the items in good shape while in storage/display.

My experience with Rennaissance wax is that it goes on easily and buffs easily. It's designed for items that won't be handled.
Neutral paste shoe polish, or paste wax, hold up a lot better, and are less expensive.

For daily use guns I like Johnsons Paste Wax or Howards Feed and Wax. Much cheaper and easier to find.

A gunsmith that used to post here put me on to Trewax. Will also slow rust.

You can't beat good old Butcher's Wax ! It's how I seal my guns from the weather since 1980 .

The stuff is used by the Smithsonian, the NRA and the House of Windsor. Read an article years ago about the museum at the Battle Of New Orleans at Chalmette Battlefield. During Katrina the place was under water. The old flintlock locks that were preserved in it came out fine after drying out. The others not so much.

My bayonets and other stuff are treated with, but not my shooter firearms. Other products work better than that.

Men at Arms just had two articles on Renissance Wax. Heating the metal before applying the wax seems to greatly increase the protection.
