Finally got me a 45/410 15" barrel for the Encore Pistol. Looking at Underwood ammo website the .45 Long Colt +P looks like is powerful enough to kill a deer. Anyone else have one?

I?ve shot a few deer with a SAA in 45 Colt. I?ve never shot +P in it.

Out to 30 yds, dead right there.

Do not do the +P's in the SAA.

I've never used the Underwood stuff but I've killed a few deer with a .45 colt. Most good ammo will work to 75 yards, some further.

The ammo you linked should work to 100 yards with good placement. SC deer aren't that big. I see you linked 300gr ammo. I've used 250gr with good results, you should be fine with the 300gr.

I had a 12" 45/410 for my Contender. The 410 shot really good. The 45 Colt not so much.

I never got really good accuracy from the 45 Colt as compared to my 44 Mag barrel, especially with Cast bullets(Which I shoot the most) I think the main reason is the long chamber and the long jump the bullet has to make before it his rifling. I believe the rifling is a very slow twist also like the Taurus Judge and this impedes accuracy with the 45 Colt ammo.

I sold mine to a guy who wanted it more than I did. Maybe they worked the bugs out good luck with it.

BTW I used to hunt almost exclusively with a handgun and have a bunch of barrels for my Old Contender. The best deer killer I have is a Custom Super 14 barrel in .309 JDJ. That is a 444 Marlin necked down to 30 cal. It is about as powerful as a 300 Savage in a rifle. 30-30 is also a great round in a 14" barrel. With spitzer 150gr bullets it is a real killer and very accurate. I took many a deer and a few elk with both.

I bought it for the .410 barrel. I have a 10" 7.62x39 barrel for the encore. It does real nice to put meat in the freezer.

    410 is fun.

I even shot a few grouse with it but it was really fun on bunnys with 3" #6.

I will give it a try squirrel hunting. Snakes are history. I have around 4-5 cases of 3" 8's.

Have an 1100 Light Field in .410. Dandy little shotgun. If you want to learn to be humble, go shoot a round of sporting clays with a .410.

I've never heard of 3" 8's, did you reload them?

I bought a few cases of some italian make yrs ago and then a few cases of these. Dealer was unloading them on Gunbroker and I think they came out to like 6.50 or so a box. I got 4 more cases. There are as many 8 pellets in a 3" 410 as in a 12 gauge 2.3/4 #6 shot. 8's are killer on doves.

Thank you. $6.50 a box is a killer deal for .410's even years ago.
