Just got a Ruger Blackhawk chambered in .357 Maximum. It looks new. Got a bunch of guns I need to get listed.

I have a great western SAA revolver chambered in .357 atomic...

First year of production and a low 3 digit serial number - John Wayne approved...

Also have one on .401 herters power mag and one in .45 colt...
    nice!

.357 Atomic was like a .357 Magnum +P, although there is some speculation on whether the cartridge was beefed up too (in addition to thicker cylinder walls) in which case it would be like a .45 Super is to .45ACP. the company is gone and original ammo is nonexistent so we can't tell other than some uncertain recollections by a few people.

either way I still want a derringer officially chambered in .357 Atomic

Somewhere in one of the safes is a 14" Contender barrel in 357 maximum. Bought it for metallic silhouette shooting. It shot well and when loaded up had plenty of oomph. Some wheel guns had a problem with eroding the top strap with the flame from the cylinder gap. Don't know if Ruger had the problem but Dan Wesson discontinued the chambering because of it. Should have made a great deer cartridge but I never gave it a try for that. Bob

I have a 10" .357 max Contender barrel. I also have a pretty good supply of brass. I do have to wonder if anymore is available? I tried shooting .38 specials out of it & the accuracy STUNK. I don't know if it's the freebore or the rate of twist but it needs the .357 max ammo.
I really expected someone would chamber a carbine in .357 max & a revolver would have been a good combination. I was surprised to see it fail, it seemed like a natural.

I just checked the auction side & there are eight auctions for .357 Max brass. There was also an auction for a 10" barrel @ $225. Way more than I thought mine was worth.

I have a theory that the flame cutting wasn't so much from the pressure as it was from the duration. loooong cartridge.

Old friend that has now passed away- old time gunsmith- made a dandy little carbine that used a wildcat he came up with- .357 Max necked down to .256. Said he was bored one day, had a box of .357 Max brass, and just wanted to see what it could do.

I bet a good gunsmith could put a small heat shield on the topstrap to prevent flame cutting. S&W did that with their Night Guard revolvers in .357 Mag to prevent flame cutting.
