I just can't do it any more

Work all day in the summer heat and humidity. It used to be a normal summer weekend thing while in my 40's to mid-fifties to get up, eat breakfast go outside and work pretty much all day until dinner with a break for water and some lunch. No more. I go out early, soak a t-shirt to wringing wet in about 1 to 1-1/2 hours even when inside the barn or garage with a flan blowing on my body. I drink lots of water and have to stop often to cool down in front of the fan.

After that time I go into the house to cool off, changing the wringing wet t-shirt after I cool down a bit. I'll cool off for a half hour or so then go back out to hell's furnace to work some more. I got a LOT done these past few days most were projects on the agenda for a while now. It is quite pleasing to know they are done.

There was a price paid.

I went through eleven t-shirt changes from Saturday at 5AM to today at 6PM. Lord knows how many gallons of reverse osmosis water I drank to stay hydrated. As I get older the cold really sucks and it hurts like hell. I will take the heat but working in hot humid air kicks the crap out of me.

Aging is not for sissies!

On another note; my doc took me off of Gemfibrozil and place me on the new super-duper refined prescription fish oil tabs. I did not realize how the Gemfibrozil (sp?) was making me way too tired. Now after being off of it for over a week I have the energy back and don't run out of gas so fast. If you take Gemfib. ask your doc about switching to VASCEPA, it may make you life a lot better. It sure did for me.

Why is that??? My well is hand dug, shallow and has tons of hardness, it will clog a coffee pot in two pots.

Reverse osmosis water is just that,.....water. No minerals, or any kind of electrolytes whatsoever. The filtration is so good everything but the water molecule is removed.

Some studies (Scientists, same guys who say we have Global Warming no one believes in) show that drinking reverse osmosis water leaches minerals eaten. I'm not 100% convinced that people on a good diet couldn't benefit from RO water and maybe a supplement.

Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

I have an RO system myself, and drink from it most of the time. When I am sweating my keester off outside though, I drink Gatorade, or some other 'sports' drink liberally in between glasses of water. I even dissolve a very small amount of sea salt in my mouth, and drink it down from time to time.

Been doing it that way for years, and no issues yet anyway. I must say that with every year that passes,...I hate summer more and more.

AMEN BROTHER! I carry my cell outside all the time just in case I do something stupid and can't move. I can text for help if necessary. One of my projects was to seal some minor leaks on the barn. It has Ondura roofing and some of the nails were not properly seated by yours truly when I put it on 16 years ago. I have a VERY sturdy ladder that I make darn sure the feet are planted into the ground and the rails are in the grooves of the Ondura. I got 90% sealed back up with roof tar but could not reach the last few without stepping on the roof. Those will just wait until my friends show up next week from Maryland. I let them hunt free on my land and they are really helpful with things that my neck prevents me from doing. Getting on a roof is one of the limits I placed upon myself and will no longer do.

It is what it is, I laugh at myself and keep on truckin'.

Get up an hour before sunrise, drink coffee and work until 12:00 before the real heat sets in.
Hot and humid as hell begins between 11:00 & 12 noon. Peaks at around 17:00. Not the best time to work.

Used to be able to work morning till dark and just come in to eat. Not so much anymore.
Did about 7 hours of pressure washing yesterday and around 5 today. North side of the house and pole barn look good, as does 3/4 of the garage. Nice days for getting wet!

I've been told the issue with RO is the PH. Add a little baking soda. If I drink tap water here, that would be far worse.

I have been liking summers more as I age. My bones don't ache as much here in the desert. Just need to protect my skin from the sun is all.

Though I didn't realize it at the time, I had a heat stroke a few years ago. Ever since, when I am outside working I'll be going along, feeling fine, feeling fine, then bam. Energy is gone seemingly from one second to the next and it is usually accompanied by goose bumps.

I take a ton of medications including opiates and I think that makes it much worse. When in my 20's, I worked at a pet food plant and ran an oven that was 750 degrees and I was stationed at the exit and still worked all day. I guess I attribute it to growing up on a farm where when the seasons are right, things have to be done NOW. The problem is, now, nearing 50, I still want to have time to myself on the weekend, but still work needs to be done. So, I try to hit it hard to get it knocked out but usually get driven back into the house with either sciatic/back pain or the overheating symptoms. It sucks. What sucks even more, is that my dad (born in '43) has a lot of rental houses and he STILL gets up and does the roofing projects including shingles though I think his knees are bothering him to the point that he may stop doing that.

Yes - it truly sucks getting old. I?m finally coming to the realization that before too long I need to find a low maintenance place to live. I can?t do firewood and plow snow for too many more years.

And they?re talking about medical ?breakthroughs? that will allow us to live into the 100s! No way!

Which also has something to do with how early they go to bed. The circle goes round.

I agree. Though not suicidal like I was when I had uncontrolled sciatica/back pain, my body has degenerated at a rate that I am not sure I even want to hit 65 at my present rate of decline. I (somewhat) joke that I should donate my body to science. They'd be like WTF is with this guys body? :lol:

Back in 2014 when a tumor was discovered in my colon, then complications of pancreatitis type II and loosing 70 pounds, severe osteoporosis which was discovered after compressing my T11 vertebra (between the bottom of my shoulder blades), breaking a rib (from bending over, then standing up too fast) a couple weeks later compressing the T9 vertebra ... from rolling over in bed.

As long as the temps were between 40 and 75 I was fine ... providing the barometer didn't crash or rise suddenly  problem is, I live in Kansas ... so the weather is always a problem. No mater how mild or hot, high humidity is the norm.

Just this year, 5 years later I think I've pretty well recovered from the temps bothering me too much, 20 to about 100 and it doesn't bother me too much, but the arthritis in my hands, hips & knee's let's me know when a storm is coming.

You're right tho, I'm 62 and this getting old stuff isn't for sissies!

WT, have you done the DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) order? I placed one on myself both in my official medical record as well as my living will.

KimberKid, where in KS are you located? I used to live in Pittsburg (SE corner) and still hunt Labette county.

Based upon Barzilla's comments on reverse osmosis water I got Gatorade and will keep it on hand when I decide to do outside work in oven temps. I pulled into the garage (open on one end) and it was still 92 degrees at 7:00 PM. I got the battery out of the tractor so I can get a new one tomorrow but that was enough of that sauna like atmosphere outside.

When I was on active duty Army asked a friend why he went to Ranger School in the winter.

He explained there were 2 reasons: Ranger school is mostly land navigation and bare trees make it easier and (the BIG reason) is that you can't cool off by walking but you can warm up that way.

    Makes sense!

I worked outside 365 days a year for 25 years and I finally realized it was over. That was nearly 5 years ago. I wonder how the hell I ever did it. The last 2 days here the heat index was 110. The winters were actually easier then the summers. Much easier to keep warm then keep cool. Hell just walking to the car the last couple of days made me gag, yet alone work in it.

Ms. WT and I have been discussing the future, we originally planned to stay here till the end. But the maintenance on the property is getting harder, schlepping wood into the furnace, cutting the grass, yadda, yadda... I want a small place with a small lawn with a short driveway in a place with 70 degree average... I?m too old for this siht.
