Same here. I have been pretty busy at work during the week and camping on the weekends!
Jon
Haha, that's awesome!
That camping gig has definitely kept us busy on the weekends! We've done 3, Friday-Sunday weekend trips so far. It has got us spending a lot more time with my brother and his wife and kids, which is awesome! We have also just "driveway camped" at the in-laws house 3 or 4 times. It's really nice to be able to just plug into their electric and use their hose for water and sleep in the camper at night. They don't seem to mind us visiting more because of it. Jenson, our dog, seems to be a winner for a camper dog too. He enjoys it a lot.
We have 1 more trip planned this summer. Mid-August, the wife and I both have a week off of work. We are heading about 4 hours across the state to a state park, for a Monday-Thursday and possibly into Friday or Saturday if they get a cancellation. I'm really looking forward to that trip. We have plans to do some hiking and kayaking in the park and visiting some area microbreweries and attractions if we get time. Just the better half and I.....away from everything. It will also be a good challenge to see how a bit longer trip pulling the camper goes and how much of our 46 gallon fresh water tank gets used up. There are shower houses at the park, so I'll just use that in case we get low on water.

stack of barf buckets
actual doctor drawing
got my house broken into again, they didn't get any guns this time, but took the security camera with them. among other things they hauled out a big screen TV, a BBQ grill, four air conditioners and two shopping carts, and nobody saw anything.
kicked in door
weapons they left behind
landlord won't replace the back door, leaving it up to me to get it done, so I put one in (300-400 bucks on lumber and hardware) that NOBODY will be able to kick in. might have some pics of that later.
at work they promoted me to a sort-of-supervisor, now I get a dollar more and do 50% more work. at least they said I'm not responsible for lack of quality/production of the workers under me. (the boss was but he quit) some guys left, hired some more, some of those didn't last, net gain of 1 moron that I have to train while I'm supposed to be running the show singlehanded (because my boss quit), and cross-training on 10 other things in case someone else quits, and cleaning out another department's work area, and another department sure could use my help on the weekends because they are so far behind...
tree next door died, told the landlord he needed to cut it down, he didn't, sure enough it fell down and smashed my truck.
$2200 damage. he refused to pay for it, telling me I'm just trying to get money from him and said my truck was a piece of crap anyway not even worth $500 (ya right) so I took him to court, and the sleazeball liar came up with 10 different excuses why he shouldn't pay for it. fortunately, the judge wouldn't be swayed one way or the other. unfortunately, he couldn't tell if the tree was actually on his property or mine without property lines from a surveyor, so he said the damage to my truck, and the cost of cleanup, is both our responsibilities. (pay for half each, both of us) I filed an appeal and paid a surveyor $600 to come out and take measurements, which will give me a schematic drawing of the property boundaries and exactly where the tree is at, to show the judge. we'll see how that goes.
glad you're having fun camping.
That's a lot of bad fortune in a small amount of time bud! Hang in there. It will get better, as I'm sure you know. Life can be funny like that....full of surprises.
I think you're making the right call on the truck damage/court case. It sounds to me like a situation where his insurance should cover 100% of the damage.
Jon
and he wrote it all in rhyming verse, three lines at a time interlocked, the prose of which baffles the modern intellect to simply read in the first place. it was fairly popular at the time, meaning lots of people read it. people must ave been brutally intelligent back then; people of today are laughably unintelligent.
When most all of the "teachers" for the last decade or two are liberal minded with an agenda, it is getting pretty hard to find any real intelligence these days!
Health is OK but getting close to the 3/4 century mark and making it longer than many, many others I've known younger than I.
Everything I own is and has been paid for long ago...home, vehicles, etc.
Getting ready to attend the 79th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally again. First time was in 1963 and it's changed alot from then but always a good time to rub elbows with some of the finer people in life.
We have enough gun laws, what we need is IDIOT control.
Blood makes you related. Loyalty makes you family.
I thought getting old would take longer.
1st reason is financial, the trade was has had a major impact on trucking, lot?s of big companies going under and I?m working the same lanes for about 40% less money than 2 years ago. It?s really not worth being out here.
2nd, my last marriage failed for many reasons but the biggest reason is I was never home, going overseas for 8 years was the straw the broke the camels back. I don?t want to do that again.
3rd, medical reasons. I may not get another med cert next year. Enlarged prostate, blood pressure, dizzy spells and loss of feeling in my arms is going to be the end of my CDL.
And lastly, I?ve worked away from he since I was 18, away working construction, away as a truck mechanic for a fiber optic company, truck driver and military contracting. To be honest I?m tired.
Sitting out here in the garage with the doors open, wife next to me, kids riding bikes in the driveway and having a popsicle watching the kids makes me just want to get a 9-5 job and let the finance company have that damned truck.
I have read this a couple of times and here's my honest to God response.....
I can't blame you either way. You've bled the trucking industry and how does one blame you for keeping on fighting the good ole' fight? On the other hand, it sounds like you have learned or are willing to adjust from past decisions to make different ones currently. Who could blame you for choosing to find a more local job, where you get to spend more time with your loved ones and at the home you've worked so hard to build?
This hits close to home, as my dad is going through a very similar thought process. He can retire at the end of this year, but will take a bit of a hit if he starts drawing at his age. That being said, his hit he would take would not trouble him and my mom financially and he has worked with this company since he was 19 years old. I told him to take the hit, retire, and enjoy everything he has earned in life. Worst case scenario, he should pick up a part-time job.
Jon
It sounds like you acknowledge making and learning from many mistakes in your OTR career. Perhaps it is time for a local job and start making new mistakes.
Seriously though, in every job there are days that leave one feeling like WTF am I doing here. When those days get to the point they overshadow the good days (at work or that you'd have at home) then it is time to do something different.
About 12 years or so ago, I was leaving work one Friday. I get out to my truck, I start it, then I just start bawling. I hadn't had a bad day, nothing was wrong, but I couldn't stop for like 10 minutes. I finally composed myself and headed home trying to figure out what the heck that was all about. Then, it dawned on me. I was already dreading coming back to work on Monday. I knew that wasn't healthy so I started looking for another job immediately.
