ever wonder if we would get advance warning about a killer asteroid? well here's your answer:

no.

because it just happened, and we didn't get a warning.

astronomers do watch for the approach of large asteroids that might hit the Earth, so somebody can somehow do something about it. (that's what the article says) so on Wednesday, when they saw one coming, the asteroid-watchers alerted each other about it; in the few hours remaining before it would hit, they could determine its size and trajectory- an obviously dangerously close trajectory, with a probability of hitting the Earth.

their estimation was 187 to 426 feet across, traveling at 55,000 MPH, and would have hit with an impact of 10 megatons of TNT. it was deemed a "city killer".

the facts were that it passed within 1/5 of the orbit of the Moon and you could have seen it with binoculars.

that was Wednesday, 7:22 PM CST.

and we get to hear about it in the news today, on Friday.

I can think of about 6 or 7 cities where improvements would be made by getting hit with a pretty good size asteroid.

Thanks guys! First an asteroid is gonna fall on me without warning. Not exactly sure what I would do if I had a warning. After that happens Joes mega- volcano is going to erupt and cover up the asteroid damage with lava and ash. I think I'll spend the rest of my life in my safe place, in the fetal position, sucking my thumb and thinking happy thoughts. ;) Bob

well if you had a warning what would it have been like? they figured out exactly whattheheck a few hours before, so they would have said "asteroid might hit the Earth, 10 megatons, would destroy an entire city if it hits. we'll find out in a few hours!" there ya go. what would you do?

that's what they would have said 2 days ago.

If I'm not killed in the initial impact, I expect to be the KING of whatever's left.

In reality, asteroids like that are too small and moving too fast to be detected early enough to give much warning. We can and do scan for bigger objects, but there's exactly zero we could do about it if they saw one coming at us. The best they could do would be to calculate where it will hit (which they could do with great precision) but even trying to evacuate a city would be impossible. Have you seen the gridlock days ahead of hurricanes? Magnify that by several times for a major city. Even if they could get out, we'd all be in the same situation as the dinosaurs - the whole globe will be affected and we can't evacuate the globe.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

If I weren't watching "Criminal Minds Season 14" I'd dig out "Deep Impact" and that one with Bruce Willis and Ben Afleck. I doubt we'll be told and if shows like "Coast To Coast" "reported" such an event they'll play it off as nutters yowling at the sun. Then by the time any Tom, Dick and Harry can see the fuzz during the day in the sky it wouldn't matter. Less time to go full "Purge". Kind a like an ant getting squished underfoot.

I've been asked before if I thought the government would tell us about extraterrestrials.

I have two opposing thoughts (much like this topic)
One. Yes they will tell us. Why? Because they now need billions in funds to update Reagan's Star wars program in preparation of alien invasion.

Two. No, they wouldn't tell us because people would panic, there would be hoarding, looting, fights, killing, etc. And, that is just in CA.:lol::lol: The rest of us would be prepared, but likely remain somewhat open minded.
