I would like to know what type of forend latch and which guns it was used on. The top is marked"PATD.MAR.26.1878. The bottom has a serial # 144849. IAny info will be appreciated.

It's identical - but I wonder how many others used the same patent in their own shotguns and whether Parker designed it or licensed it for use from the inventor

I stole the pic - thought it displayed an 8 at the end - per above referenced data yes I am positive / sure / certain...
Variations and grades and models and options and action sizes vary greatly over course of production but do follow a pattern as well
Checked a dozen or so sources and I have the hardware from a 28 gauge VH model here somewhere and the latch matches yours...

I have essentially an entire 28 gauge minus the receiver and at some point researched the proofs and markings...
