More Trailer Talk! Redecking time!

Well......here we go. I have a 35' gooseneck that I got for a steal ($5k), even after I allowed $2k for redecking it, and $1500 for new tires, which it needs also. They are $10k-12k for that size here, IF you can find one. They rarely come up for sale.

Anyway, to redeck it in Apitong is $2440! This includes almost $600 shipping.

I can buy Douglas Fir boards for $414, but they'll probably only last 7-8 years here in the desert.

I am not going to be hauling anything that the DF won't stand up to. They just don't last as long, but at 1/6th of the price, I think I can live with that!

What do you guys think?

What would you do?

Oh----moderate use on this trailer. I'll be moving my Case 580 MXT, and hauling shipping containers, mostly. Nothing super heavy duty.

+1 seems you could do it 6 times for same money,=35+ years for same money, will the $2500 deck last 35 years??

You should have come to the Midwest. 30-35' GN trailers are sitting all over with FOR SALE signs hanging in front.

See if you can find a source for rough cut cottonwood. It's used a lot as trailer decking in these parts. Very fibrous and holds up better than Douglas Fir.

I wish I could! You can't find jack here in AZ. All you find is Doug Fir, and pine! :(

No oak, no elm, no cottonwood.........nothin. It is almost as if they don't sell non-native trees locally as lumber. :D

That would be the ticket. As Neo said, cottonwood has a very stringy/fibrous construction. This makes this wood very tough, and durable. It makes excellent low boy decking and dumptruck side boards. They use the stuff to make big crane/dragline mats to walk big cranes on when on soft/swampy ground.

    DF and get to work
Although always described as a cowboy, Roswellnative generally acts as a righter of wrongs or bodyguard of some sort, where he excels thanks to his resourcefulness and incredible gun prowesses.
