got 6 canvas GI duffel bags. been rolled up forever. checked them out today and they are damp somehow. don't want them to rot so I unrolled them and laid them out around my front room to air out. smells like canvas. luv that smell

It is likely an atavistic adaptation to remember good food/bad food, or possibly to remember which predators eat people - but our smell memory is one of the most powerful types of recall that we have. Regardless, the merest whiff of something can take us back decades. And we can remember smells even when they aren't actually there.

Yup, I can call up the smell of those old canvas tents even now. Nothing else quite like it.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

A great smell that brings back so many great memories!
My Dad bought a Herters Canvas Umbrella tent in the mid 60's for Canadian moose hunting. That tent has all metal poles! It's the real deal and I still have it!
I could have lived in that tent when I was a kid!
In the 90's I was in Indian Guides and Princesses with my Son and daughter. We "camped" in that old tent a few times a year and ours never leaked or had a problem like most of the new lightweight nylon ones had........
    Yup, love that smell.............

That's what we had as a kid. It was an old green surplus army tent. Weighed a ton and if it got wet, I swear it would take weeks to dry out.
