Squirrel dog

Been considering getting a Stephen's Cur for awhile now. Good tight mouthed tree dogs generally and can be worked on other game as well. Found out about 3 months ago a buddy of my uncle got a pair from the mountains down in Kentucky a and had a litter. When I called all the pups were spoke for. The guy called my uncle last week and let him know if I was still interested he had a 5 month old male pup available because someone else had issues and couldn't take it.

I went to look at the pup today and brought him home with me. He has been running loose for 5 months (the guy lives on a farm out in the country). Running loose is great. pups learn a great deal that way. It is out of registered stock and I got the papers, I can register it when it is 12 months old. I may or may not, but he is out of registered stock. Good built dog, straight legs, stands up well on feet and toes aren't to long or sprawled. Good ear, his nose is a might narrow but within line for the breed. I liked the pup's actions and his friendliness. He was interested in what ever was going on around him and moved well. So I forgave the nose and decided to take a chance on him. The nose resembles more the original mountain cur which is what the Stephens cur was breed out of.

So I picked up a registered pup with 2 rounds of shots that had been running loose 5 months for 100 bucks. I'll be shooting game out to him by December if not sooner.

we have a male Black Mouth Cur that would have made a squirrel dog if my boys would have just hunted him but they were not interested in hunting much at all :(

My brother got a dog sometime ago and other than being told it was a shepherd mix he had no idea what breed it was, neither did the Vet. I looked it over and told him to pull up some pictures of black mouth cur dogs. Dog is a spitting image of a black mouth cur except his color and markings, that's the shepherd side.

The guy's grandsons have been calling him Bo I think i'll just go on using it. My Mom wanted to call him Blaze because he has a white blaze on his chest. I didn't really care for that, so Bo it is.

I had a dog like this before and we called him Boots because he had 4 white feet. This one has white accents on his toes on all 4 feet and the blaze on his chest, but his head and the rest of him is black.

    Nice.

As a kid growing up we always had Black Mouthed Cur's as a family/hunting dog. They were great squirrel dogs. I trained mine to be a good grouse dog too.

I know it sounds crazy but my Golden Retriever's do a good job on squirrel.

It doesn't sound crazy to me. I've treed * with beagles and shot birds over a german shepherd to name a couple.

I would love to drink a few beers and talk about dogs. Because it takes awhile to tell a good story about your favorite dogs.

One of my favorites is a dog we had that the wife found on the road. She found two pups and like every stray she found she wanted to keep them. I'm not much on keeping a dog that doesn't do something. But I told here we could keep the male and to find a home for the female. She gave the female to a friend of hers. A male dog isn't as much trouble as a female and plus I kind of liked the look of him. He aggravated the crap out of me when he was young. We lived on a farm then and I let him run loose the majority of the time. You couldn't even get him in the house unless you carried him or pulled him in.

It would take time to tell his progression as a hunting dog so I'll keep it short. He progressed to treeing anything than climbed, was a good rabbit dog, he would point birds, retrieve (land and water) and was the absolute best hunt dead dog I have ever been in the field with. I hunted him on pheasants in SD for 10 days straight when he was 12 years old and he never missed a beat. He became ill and died the following summer at the age of 13. He was the smartest dog I've ever had. He wouldn't even do his business in the yard around the house, he always went in the field on the other side of the driveway. Watched for cars before crossing a road and other things.

Here's the thing, though mixed the dog had a lot of Stephens Cur in him. The markings and the head showed this. I do not know what else he had in him. He is one reason I was considering a Stephens Cur and ended up with the pup I just got. I do not expect this dog to do all that he did just what he was breed to do. This pup does seem to be smart and takes to thing quickly.

That is OK Leroy Jethro, I ran a search and found some photos from the two registries that recognize the breed. I do wonder why they are call cur. Back to the search engine.

IIRC you posted pictures of him when he was a pup. Good to hear he is doing well.

Yesterday was dog day for me.

Both my dogs got trimmed and bathed

Jack my 5 y/o Golden has a beutiful coat but I like to trim it up so I spent about 30 min with my clippers. I cut his "beard" down some, shave his belly(to keep him cool), trim his ears, tail and butt. I don't cut much just kind of clean it up and shape it. I have become a pretty good dog barber.

Charlie my 3 Y/o Golden gets the "Puppy" Cut. I put the #5 skip tooth on the clippers and away we go. Now he as 7/8" all over and he looks like a big Puppy(which he is).

Then it was bath time. They love getting a bath and playing in the hose.

This wasn't a planned thing but I had to do it because Charlie rolled on a dead Turtle :x He was so proud that he smelled like a dead turtle and had bits of shell and meat on his side.

Once it getting a little cooler I will take them out and we will go jump ducks along the creek and maybe shoot a few squirrels.

I was headed out for a little river ride.
As I was launching my boat, my beagle was rolling in a dead carp.
She "accidentally" fell into the river for a bit, and then I made her ride in the front of the boat. :D

Its funny because not all dogs will do it. I had a female Rottweiler who I would take running with me for PT. I had a 20' lead and she would just lope along at a perfect 7 min a mile pace.

    But

If there was anything dead on the road she was going to roll on it. The only thing she would pass up was a skunk.

When I was stationed in Panama I had a Yellow Lab who would roll in monkey crap, rotten mangos and any other dead stinking thing he could find.

For some reason Charlie likes dead reptiles the best, frogs, skinks, snakes and turtles. He is fond of Deer poop as after shave and a quick snack. He also eats acorns like wild hog. He got in my garden and ate strawberry's and cucumbers. He is a trip and one look at him and you know he is a character.
