"Back Hauls" are a load you pick up at point B or near it, and haul back to point A.
"Haul Back" may have another meaning in another part of the country, but around here, it's a refused delivery that has to go back to the shipper at point A.

    Got me on that one!

I know the term ?back hauls? is often a term for cheaper rates.

Before I stopped last month I had a few direct shippers out of Idaho, potato loads, no brokers as I hauled direct. The loads coming back to Montana came out of Sam Adams in Allentown PA, they were considered a ?back haul? to get me back home and close to my shippers in Idaho. Those Sam Adams loads were cheap, $2500 or so cheaper paying than the potato loads I took east, back haul.

My friend drives for a company that manufactures roof trusses. Occasionally, he will deliver a load 200 miles or more, only to turn around and bring them back. Either the builder has no place to store them or scheduling people screwed up.
He says it about a $1000 mistake for his company.

In my younger days it referred to taking a load for just fuel cost, etc, so truckers didn't lose money running back home empty.

Guys would get good paying loads into Texas but there was nothing good to haul back and they'd get loads of produce just to pay their fuel bill.

It sounds like something a shipping company hands out to encourage drivers to be careful with their loads so they don't get refused.
