I do like them just the ability of the people who designed and built the huge machines is amazing in its own right . something nostalgic watching a stem engine under load and full out
but my oldest son lives for the trains he travels the country photographing and riding every chance away from from work he gets even local specialty trains that come by ( we live a couple miles away fro the RR tracks ) and I know is supporting member of the steam engine 765 in Indy.
I have a faint memory of riding In Dad?s car and watching the sparks from the overhead wires.
The whole town turned out the day they demolished the smoke stacks of the power plant in the early 60?s.

They did have such a thing, and it was known as a "cab forward". As far as I know they were mainly used in the Continental Divide region, as well as the Cascades, and Sierra Nevadas. Places where there were long tunnels on railroads.
