For some reason I hate that show and always have. I think because it made a mockery of the Marine Corps and I don't like Jim Neibors.

It is still on TV and I watched a little of it last night.

I am not a fan of Maybery RFD either.

These 2 shows are still on they play them on METV. Why don't they play some good shows like Rat Patrol or The Invaders maybe Combat.

Can't say I hated those two but Combat and Rat Patrol are both great shows.

me and my dad used to sit on the couch and watch Rat Patrol.

now the episodes are on u-tube. checked out a few. a bit too hokey and mindless for me.

really, if watching them on a computer isn't good enough and you are tech savvy, you can use your tv to view your computer desktop, go to u-tube, play the video on full screen and watch it on your tv while sitting on the couch.

ABC's answer to Combat was a series called The Gallant Men. Took place in Italy, WWII. I liked the way they went to commercial break by slowly covering up the TV screen with battle ribbons.

I agree with Sam on Gomer Pyle USMC. Even as a kid, I knew it was so far from reality, that it made a mockery of the actual Corps.

You mean that the show didn?t accurately reflect life in the Corps? Say it ain?t so!

Maybe you don't like his character but Jim Neighbors was a heck of a nice guy. Sure he was happy. but not handsy or on the make. Just a pleasant personable nice guy.

Also - before he died, he was meritoriously / honorarily promoted to Corporal. He did so much for the Corps? image they periodically promoted him.

    Great singing voice as well.

I think the Corp has stood up to a little poking of fun just fine. There should be no sacred cows in my view. That said, Gomer Pyle was stupid and inane. Some of the others mentioned were pretty silly too, though I did like Combat with Vic Morrow.

Seems like Pyle was in basic training for a few years during the Nam War to me! Although I enjoy the Andy Griffith show only up until the time the series went to color. From then on with the likes of Howard Spraig, Goober, Warren, and a few others, the show drastically went down hill IMHO. Kind of like Wagon Train without Major Seth Adams and Flint McCullough (I had to look up Flint's spelling :D ). That show sucked after those two were gone.

Basically, Gomer was a spin-off from Andy and keeping his country bumpkin thing going got old pretty fast for me. There are a few things from the show that keep my memories of it alive. Back in the summer of '74, Frank Sutton died. I was in basic training at the time and heard the sad news while there at Lackland AFB. Yes, we even had our own Basic Airman Pyle in our flight!! From North Carolina to boot!

Also remember a few old jokes from back then......Miss Poo Be, Gomer's girlfriend......OH, nevermind! I could get banned for telling!

Also not a fan of the two shows you mentioned or the one where Shultz knows nothing, but I do like the Andy Griffith show

He was doing a public relations for The marine corps with mom and apple pie! In the middle of Vietnam war they needed it. America lost its innocence after pulling out of that war and with all the civil rights riots and women lib it didn't help out either. The country is now listless and has no rudder anymore.

Yep, he was highly regarded by the Corps and was a true gentleman. Here's him and me at the Marine Corps birthday as guests of the Commandant.

I'm gonna go with " Hogans Heros", For the one thing, the black guy wouldn't have lived long enough in the field -- let alone make it to a German POW camp where the German SS showed up about every episode and it seems that there were only about 6 guys in the entire camp. Never liked that show.

I understand how some of you feel about the show but still I really don't like the show. Even SSG Carter and most of the other NCO's look like a bunch of idiots.

I have had a few Soldiers similar to Gomer only not that stupid and we have a saying; "There are 2 kinds of Rangers Smart ones and strong ones" If I had some idiot like Gomer he would have been one strong SOB ;)

Sam, I inherited a 'strong (former) one' when I moved to my last team. Great guy, could shoot the eye out of a gnat at 1000 yards, ran like a deer, etc. Unfortunately, that was where it stopped, there was just nothing going on upstairs. The list of, ahem, "screw ups" was endless until I finally had to DQ him and worked out a transfer to another unit where he was less likely to get someone hurt. He was a shooter though...managed to get his girlfriend with a single head shot (.40 cal) on a downward angle, thru a closed window, from about 45-50' away.

Alright, since this thing is still going I'll stand up.
I liked the show. Even my eight year old self watching re-runs after school
didn't believe it was an actual representation of Marine life, but I thought it was funny.
And even now I don't think it was meant to demean the institution.
