And sometimes the horn

This guy went to see if the deer he shot was dead...............it wasn't and it killed him.

C&P
A deer hunter has died after the buck he shot attacked him when he went to check whether it was dead.

Thomas Alexander, 66, died on Tuesday near Yelleville, Arkansas after shooting the buck with a muzzleloading rifle, officials said.

'I've worked for the Game and Fish Commission for 20 years, and it's one of the stranger things that's happened,' agency spokesman Keith Stephens told KYTV of the shocking incident.

Stephens said that it appears Alexander was approaching the fallen buck when the animal got up and attacked him.

'I don't know how long he left it there, but he went up to check it to make sure it was dead. And evidently it wasn't,' Stephens said.

My best friend and his dad used to guide brown bear hunters.
His rule was shoot them 'till they are dead....

I shot a deer one time with my bow. He went about 10 years and dropped. I waited about 10 minutes and walked up on him and he jumped up and charged me. Dropped dead right in front of me.

I read the full story along with the news video on Yahoo. When I checked out the stories comments I was totally pissed at all of the anti-hunting\hunter jokes that were being made about the poor fellow!

In my younger days, deer hunting was mostly about filling the freezer. I often began gutting while the deer was still doing it's final death throes. One evening I whacked a big buck that went down hard. As I walked up, I propped my rifle against a sapling and proceeded to cut his throat. The melee that ensued was the first and only time I really wished I had a handgun on my person while rifle hunting. In the end, I prevailed and got my knife through his jugular before he could really hurt me much. Had I not been 35 years old in excellent physical condition and strong as I was, that episode could have gone differently.
In my senior years now, if the deer falls within sight, I just sit and watch for a few minutes before approaching.
The version I read of the OP's incident indicated that the antler time wound might not have been the cause of death. The real cause might have been health related.

The Top barrel has a 3" 00 buck in it for such episodes when I approach from the rear of the animal. Thankfully not needed so far. I also carry a .357

    +1

That is what my Dad taught me too.

With dangerous game I put and insurance shot in them unless I am sure they are done.

You hunt in Africa and any of the dangerous stuff you always shot them when they are down, sometimes more than once.

That's what I do and what I taught my sons. I walk up from the back side of the deer, looking for signs of life of course. On a buck, After tapping in the eye, when I reach down for him the first thing I grab is the antlers. That way if he has any life in him I have at least got leverage as long as I hang on. That being said it's never been an issue.

Although always described as a cowboy, Roswellnative generally acts as a righter of wrongs or bodyguard of some sort, where he excels thanks to his resourcefulness and incredible gun prowesses.

You'll get those that always seem to say that he went out doing what he loved doing. That sentiment isn't really too bad when there just isn't anything to really say to the loved ones left behind. I prefer to say nothing except for hugs and condolences myself though.

I could not believe all the joking, sarcastic comments that followed the Yahoo article made by the PITA crowd. This story is not all that uncommon. Older folks and even a few unhealthy young ones end in tragedy during hunting season. More go while shoveling heavy snow.

I was walking back to my truck shortly after nightfall, Deer hunting, snow on the ground. I look down a lane cut through the brush and a year-old Wild hog is rooting around. He was facing me so I shot right between the eyes. Hog goes down in a pile. I was maybe 30-40 yards from my truck and my young hunting dog. I go to the truck, let the dog out and lead him to the downed Hog just to see what he'd do. He promptly starts chewing on the Hogs rectum, Hog jumps up and the dog grabs his hind leg, the Hog grabs my dogs hind leg. The did a half dozen high-speed circles before the Hog let loose and dived into the brush.

Lesson learned, don't ever assume they are dead.
