Walker?s stipulations, according to Mark Crawford for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers: he wanted an improved version of the revolver that Colt had patented in 1836. It needed to hold six bullets, be simple to reload and ?be powerful enough to kill a man with a single shot.?

Moon clips don't hold 10 rounds?
Just kidding. They actually carried them in pairs in saddle holsters on their horses. I have held an original Colt Walker in my hand and it was an awesome experience. Have also owned and shot a couple of replicas.
There is no way in hell you would rather carry a SAA in 44-40 than a Glock 17 in 9mm into a gunfight.
What Colt really accomplished with this was improving manufacturing processes and being the first to be good at mass production of pistols.
