Doesn't anyone remember when the 6.8mm cartridge was first introduced to the military? Don't you remember the 6.8 SPC by Remington and some wayward military 'experts'? The cartridge stuck around for the civilian population but the military nixed it after a short test period. It has to have been 20 years ago if a day. OK, well it was 2002 so I missed by 3 years... And it's not .267" as stated in the article, it's .277" as it's always been. Using the bore diameter is just another way to name a bullet but this sloppy attempt to persuade us into believing that this is a new bullet is fallacious.
Someone is asleep at the wheel when it comes to budget reviews. The military (every branch) trots out it's 'new' ideas when they have budget money to spend because if they don't, they lose it! So the game is to not only spend what they have but to get another program into testing to extend that budget figure higher. Then if that idea fails, the DOD (the real elephant in the room...) steps up to create the program it feels should be used to create the next big idea.
Besides, the 6.5 cartridge will ruin any chance another cartridge has.
Enjoy the 'new idea.
Best.
I very much doubt the Army is going to switch to the 6.8 in 3 years.
Is the 257 roberts on the radar maybe the 7mm-08, or the 6.5 creedmore, probably not. They'll have to come up with something brand new even if it is old. Of course none of the those cases would make the ammo lighter even if the platforms were developed, so it would take developing both the platforms and the cartridge.
