do the velocities look right on these charts? different cartridges from 3.0" to 18" barrel
(the idea is to compare penetrative power)

right click on the picture to see it full size.
or see it in action with the sliding cursor at http://teracube.net/gc choose "penetrative power" from the menu

Velocity doesn't have as much bearing on penetrative powder, (as far as handguns are concerned). As does bullet construction and profile. Bullets that are made of a hard substance, that doesn't deform. Will penetrate from a hand gun, at relatively low velocities.

There was a guy, who use to do a lot of velocity and penetration/expansion testing on U Tune.(Before the antis ran him off). Who supported the above, in his testing of various 9 mm ammo.

There were (2), light for caliber 9 mm bullets. That did the best penetration wise, in Kelvar vests, (not hard plastic body armor). They were military loads made in Sweden and Czechoslovakia. Whose bullets/jackets had a very high steel content. That is, the heavy bullet jacket was made of either iron or steel. With a comparably light lead core. The velocities were between 1250 & 1350 FPS, with bullets between 90 & 100 grains.

Far as I remember, both these loads. Went through 3 A, Kelvar vests. But not 3 A, plastic body armor.

You want penetration, try the 7.62?25mm Tokarev round. 85grn at 1600 to 1800fps. The Russians put it to good use on the Nazis when the entered Berlin, taking out snipers in house to house fighting by shooting through the buildings. Don't know if it still is, but it was the round to test body armor.

yep. round nose vs flat nose. solid copper vs FMJ. bigger or smaller meplat. I have seen a video where a solid copper shot out of a 10mm went through bulletproof glass without deformation, and a video where a .45 FMJ deformed when shot at a gel block.

this provides the numbers. bullet construction makes it a whole different ball game, but you start with numbers like these.

thanks for that bit of info, but I need a way to work with available choices. I only have x, y and z and I have to figure out which is the best one.
