In Saudi and Kuwait in ?90 and ?91, the only fresh news we received that wasn?t weeks old, was by listening to the BBC on our HF radios.

Would only come in at night.

There were no cell phones, and cell phones hadn?t been invented yet. No internet to be had, and really wasn?t up and running yet, anyway.

GG, In our missions, we used UHF to talk to other aircraft and our ground bases, and VHF-FM to talk to US Army troops. We also had a directional ADF receiver and a crypto UHF unit, plus the TACAN/ILS nav set and IFF transponder. It was a VERY crowded panel in that small airplane and the black box rack took up the whole rear of the cabin.

Rocky its still like that the AF is on different freqs than the Army. We used Harris Tac Sat in UHF mode to call in fighters and bombers.

Radios in the military are so much better now than 20-30 years ago. Not only are they smaller and lighter the batteries are too and they are much more secure.

Man, I sure hope so. We carried two survival/rescue radios in our bailout vest because it upped the odds that one of them might actually work. And they were the size and weight of a brick.

Actually, CB (Rubber Duck) is 27mhz +/- in what the FCC calls the HF (High Frequency) band.

"Breaker breaker 19" -- The call channel 19 is 27.185 MHz
