Butane As A/C Refrigerant? Really?

My system is getting older, and my HVAC guy told me that when it is replaced, it will be replaced with a unit using butane as refrigerant. Not a good selling point for me.

I'll hang onto this one as long as I can. If Freon, or R12, or R14, or R134a leaks out of a system, it's just a leak. Patch it and refill it.

If BUTANE leaks out, there is a very good chance that the house will burn down.

HVAC guy claims it's the law. How stupid is that?

Well, I wouldn't say "probably", because there still some safety problems to be resolved before R-290 is approved for residential use.

But, ammonia has been used as a refrigerant by all the ice cream plants for many years. At least, when there is a leak, you can see the white cloud coming at you.

There are several gas fuels that make a great refrigerant. Really, many things that can go through the phase change state at reasonable/reachable means could be used.

I know a guy that has a home made sub-ambient phase-change cooling system for his computer. I think it is either LPG or propane. As mentioned above, propane is already being used commercially as R-290.
