University of Virginia Cancels Traditional Veterans Day 21-Gun Salute Over 'Gun Violence' Concerns

?It also, ironically, sends an unfortunate message about students: That they are too fragile, too delicate, too distractible to deal with the ?interruption? of the salute. That they are too insular, too wrapped up in their own worlds to comprehend and accept this longstanding practice. That they must be protected from the reality that exists outside academia.?
The half-hearted and meaningless recitations of 'Thank you for your service' from folks who have not given 10 minutes of thought to veterans over the entirety of the year. The pandering to people simply because some of us made an informed decision somewhere in our past to take a job with a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
But what is worse is the politicizing of the day, and the societal gymnastics that we go through to honor the individuals who have and are participating in the endless wars that most thinking people believe we should exit.
I could not care less if a University chooses to stop a tradition that has only been around for a decade or so. What I do care about is how we pretend we support those who serve and have served, but continue to support sending them places to kill and to die when we have no business sending them there in the first place.
I am beginning to wonder if I were more aware in the late 60s, where I would have stood. 'Support our Troops; Bring them Home' makes a hell of a lot of sense to me today. It probably did to a whole lot of patriotic people back then as well.

100% Kimi.
The interesting thing about your statement is that many (sadly probably most) in this day and age will not understand what you are saying.
Brad Steele
Concur, provided they don't read the first sentence, Don.
Hope you and yours are doing well!
Thanks, kimi.
Getting ready to move into partial retirement here at the end of the year. Getting a little burnt out, and it is time to move on.
Hope you too are doing well.

Just a little bigotry balance there. Carry on.
Does 2.5 million still buy a mansion in SC, SF?
How many axles would that be?

Your assumption has just identified you as a South hater...but who would that surprise?
All they need in SC is another progressive swamper.
A few neo-Nazi leftists do not define the current attitude of millions of Americans who recognize, accept, and even celebrate that which is our history.
Yes, there were a few bigots standing in support of the statue/memorial to Robert E. Lee; bigots who would judge a person by his skin color.
On the flip side, it seemed the majority standing in opposition to them exist in a narrow minded bigotry of thought which is intolerant of anything and anyone not marching in lockstep with their view. The bigotry balance existed long before Trump or you stated anything.

And, unfortunately will continue to exist long after us.
