Friends and Shotguns

I have been running a project in a western state for the past year, made a real friend in that time.
Mike is my E&I plant resource, a raw bone "Plainsman" with a white beard and a squint in one eye; (his name has been changed to protect the guilty).

You can have lively and stirring offline,(not project related), conversations with Mike on a wide breath of subjects. He is like talking to my grandfather, a front porch country philosopher, who helped my understanding of "The Truth, The Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth, so help you God", and that that last part was thrown in there case the truth part wandered to far off the straight and narrow.

Grandpa could say things out of the blue like, " You courting any young lady"? You had to be on your game; was the question a probe, diversion, or merely a flanking maneuver. Had he found out Me and my cousin had taken his, "DAYS-O-WORK", Chewing Tobacco to try?
If you blundered into the ambush, he might ask how many "Hands" tall she was, have you checked her teeth, and ask Grandma over for her assessment of your horse trading skills.

Anyway, Mike walked in the trailer while I was musing at my desk, and asked what I was in such deep thought about?

I want to buy a new shotgun to take Pheasant Hunting, but I really don't need another shotgun.

I got a look between how "Archie Bunker" use to look at "Edith". and "The Horror, The Horror" from "Apocalypse Now".

your thinking is all wrong, repeat after me,"I WANT- THEREFORE,, I NEED" with a 'are you clueless trail off tone to the statement.

I snapped my finger and sat straight up, 'That's it'. I let it sink in and swirl around for a moment with hand to chin. He gave me a semi-exasperated look and exclaimed, " NOW WHAT".

How do I get past my wife?

I now got the "Archie Bunker" to "Meatheat" Look. You tell her it's for the Grandsons', an even more, "are you completely clueless", trail off tone.

OF COURSE, its not exactly the whole truth, but now exactly a complete fabrication, besides I wouldn't give'm a gun that didn't work properly.

Suddenly, all was clear and in harmony: Space, Time, and Gravity, and how to answer the wife if she asks, "how she looks in a dress".

Mike: Are we FINISHED? Where we going to eat, how bout a burger, and you're buying,,,, YOU'RE WELCOME!

A new shotgun and a burger - a great way to end a day.. Relatively.

Funny how sometimes we need reminded of what we already know. Friends are good for that.

    Indeed

I give him those rhetorical quips to see how he responds and to get him railing on some tangent.

    Funny

Holy moly that's crazy talk! Just saying that could be the first stage of something really serious. I don't think anybody actually knows where liberals come from but this very well could be how it all starts. I can't see this ending well.;)

This is the real reason why young guys should hang out with old guys! Kind of like gravity, where being around experience just seems to flow downward. ;)
