Need a damn good ad blocker

Don't know why but within the past couple of weeks, the number of pop up ads has gone crazy.

Any really good ad blockers available??????

Thanks

    Ad block plus.

I use AdBlockPlus. It's an extension available on FireFox. Works very well on many sites, but a few have figured out how to get around it. Has an easy way to report an ad that comes through and each time I have done it that ad never shows up again.

Far FAR better is uBlock Origin. Trust me.

    What is your geek level?

I use a Raspberry Pi on my LAN to do quite a few things (split into LAN into multiple subnets and route between them as well as routing two of them to the world, QoS to control bandwidth usage so I can do remote work, home network DNS with fake domain, etc) but one of them is to have it act as a caching DNS server. And then on top of that, I run several fake domains (much easier to do livingroomtv.home.test than 172.16.198.124) and I spoof DNS info for quite a few domains. Started wtih a list from http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/ and then added to it (google's ad services, google's site stats tracking stuff, etc). No ads, no cross site tracking of usage, etc. As a bonus, when it is homework time I can redirect all requests to a webserver that tells my kids "Kids, it is time to do homework. See me if you need internet access for that".

Downsides - only works when connected to my home network. Can be used remotely, but is kinda hard to set up without a static IP address. Requires high level geek skills.

Upsides - no config on devices needed - if it is on your network it Just Works. Slightly speeds up web browsing (reduces time for initial request to be made), especially if your ISP has a crappy DNS server (most do now that the mom-n-pop dialups are all gone....) Ability to block other sites - have a problem with your kids using Facebook too much/at all/etc? Block 'em. Note that I've thought about using this aspect and making a sale-able version that blocks ALL and then allows based on desired input (whitelist vs. blacklist). Figure for schools, religious fundies (of all followings....), etc

Note that the list from yoyo.org can be had in a format to use in your hosts file - this means you can do it on Mac or Windows desktops/laptops and (if you root it) Android devices. Not possible on a i-Thing though....

(I tried posting that as a new reply to the thread but got blocked by GB's crappy software. Hope the edit makes it).

I don't use an ad blocker. I don't NEED one. I use Acrylic. this tells you what it is.

scroll down to the Host File Manager section.

In most browsers, go to Menu or Tools, then click on Add-Ons. Type uBlock Origin in the search box and when it comes up, simply click on Install. Done.

Have no idea what a browser is or where to find it. I only click on google or email thingies so don't screw the damn thing up.

Oh, boy. Well, a browser is what you use to browse the internet. Such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Bing. You have to be using a browser to be here.

    Any idea which yours is?

I use Fire Fox for a browser and their ad blocker +

It works really good, I see very few if any adds, none here.

Google is used to search for anything I want to find....to get to GB or EB or look for anything.

Little Google indicator thingy, red/blue/yellow circle comes up and put the arrow on it and push the button on the mouse gizmo. Just type in whatever and a whole bunch of sites come up

Okey dokey. You are in Chrome.

Up in the right hand corner you see three grey dots. Click there.

Now come down to More Tools and click that.

Now click on Extensions. A page will open up.

Type uBlock Origin in the search bar near the top.

When that comes up, click on Install.

UBlock Origin is your ONLY choice, really.

Ad Block Plus got stupid. So now if you pay a fee to them, your popups will be whitelisted, and let through! Ridiculous!

Get UBlock Origin, and be done with it.
