There's a weird vibe in the air...

Just got back from my weekly grocery run and things just felt weird.  People scurrying around grabbing stuff, almost pushing each other out of the way to get to their coveted items, and not a stitch of toilet paper to be found.  Folks just seem to have lost their collective minds.  Next time out the LCP stays home and the 23 gets to go along.

I'm not participating either.  I have what I need for now.  I might get some eggs in a week or so.  I did go to the Chinese Buffet here in town last night and picked up a to go box.   I figured they could use the business and I was right.  I had to pay with a Benjamin and the lady told me she barely had change for it as business had been slow all day, and this was Saturday evening.

Absolutely spot on, Sam.  Pisses me off what they're getting away with fanning the flames.

While this is spreading quickly, they fail to mention that most people have mild symptoms.  The problem lies with those who will overwhelm the medical system thinking there is a shot or Rx for this...there isn't.
I have switched from carrying the Glock 48 to carrying my G17.  A bit bulkier but I am ok with that.

As far as the toilet paper issue goes,.....keep in mind that a lot of it is being bought up by dirt bags that are selling it on Flea-bay, and other places for 10 bucks a roll. The same types that were hoarding up the .22 ammo and scalping people for it.

Save for there being no TP, wipes, sanitizing sprays or cleaners,....nothing is really different around here in the stores so far. Plenty of food of all kinds save for things like powdered milk, and canned meat like Spam.

Good to see the clue light flashing with most of you. DEMOCRAT corporate media are responsible for spreading fear and panic and using these tactics to take out Trump.  Main stream media is the enemy within.

The vibe is outright defeatism. If the American people had the same  attitude on 7 December, 1941, FDR would have to sued for peace on the spot, which was exactly what the Japanese high command wanted to happen.

I got Shanghaied yesterday from getting my Irish on. I was taken on a visual tour of couple of Targets, a supermarket, a Mexican supermarket and a mom and pop bodega. Both Targets' shelves where the toilet paper wait for customers were empty. All the bleach were missing as well. Looked over the rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide isle and it was bare as well. Booze was plenty on the shelves. The strange part was all the jugged water was missing. Does the Corona Virus come up through the pipes? It's not like it's Cholera. Spoke with a Target employee for a bit laughing at the situation. I must say this must be like hurricane season on the East Coast. I was told there was a fight over toilet paper in Australia?

The supermarket was pretty much like Target. While there a Mexican woman told us there was toilet paper at the Mexican supermarket. Since I was out and I might as well get some chicharones (pork rinds for all y'all whities who no speaky Mexican). Got there and their supplyy of Mexican toilet paper was also gone. Made me wonder if the whities came and pillaged or the Mexicans are also gullible to mass hysteria? So went to the mom and pop bodega for sandwiches. There while waiting for the eats we moseyed the shelves and saw bleach and toilet paper. Mental note when the world goes "zombie-fied" hit up mom and pop bodegas for supplies.

I hope at the end of this all the news media gets sued for ramping up this terrorist act of trying to be relevant.

Most people that I know, live hand-to-mouth and day-to-day.   They depend on utilities to supply water and lights and to take their sewage and trash.  They shop every day and eat out several times week.  They take a pill for every imagined ailment and more pills for the side effects.
    They are doomed!

I can't believe they misspelled "Pork and Beans!"

Just the thought of some chicharones makes my mouth water. Give them a shot of lime, and wash them down with an ice cold Mexican beer: Pacifico for me. No shortage of Hispanics in Florida, but they are all Cuban, Colombian or from Puerto Rico. Taco Bell is as close as you can get to Mexican food in Florida, and the local TB is now drive-through only. I hate eating in the car, and the chow will be cold by the time I get home.

Just imagine what would be happening it the mortality rate was closer to 10% overall instead of 3% for the elderly..

I did the math tonight from the JH Dashboard.

it is creeping up, now at 3.8 % fatality rate for confirmed cases.

I found that also when I stopped at local grocery store for a few items.  I just cannot believe how far this has gone.  I am glad I have stocked up over the years on ammo and reloading supplies.  After seeing how people are handling this I cannot fathom what would happen if we had a pandemic with a high mortality rate.
  • BobJudyBobJudy Member Posts: 6,671 ✭✭✭✭

So part of the math causing panic is how you arrive at the sum total of your equation...

The annual flu will kill 1% on average.

But that's not 1% of all Americans - it's 1% of all infected.

    Big difference.

Not to jump on anyone here - watching the news I have noticed this error and been annoyed by it.

    Mike

It is impossible to get a overall fatality rate here in the U.S. How many total infections have there been? The testing has been on a very small subset of those that contracted the virus. How many people had the virus and recovered thinking it was just a cold or mild case of flu, or had no symptoms at all? We have 3700 diagnosed cases with 68 deaths. Have 10 times that number actually had the virus and not been diagnosed? It looks to me that the overall fatality rate has to be much lower than reported but I guess logic has no place in news reporting. Bob

Yeah. We don't have good stats on this right now and won't have for quite some time. Those concerned will be raking hot coals and reading tea leaves for years. It would be interesting to hear from an actuary right now. They always try to have a handle on this stuff and probably do. If you're unfamiliar with the term "actuary" just look it up.

We just went to the Vietnamese restaurant for lunch.   Delicious, one of the best restaurants in town.
This place had half the normal number of customers.   Normally lots of take out orders, today, very few.

I was out and about briefly on Saturday and felt the same vibe. Like all the people were just quieter than normal and shelves were nearly bare everywhere. No panic, per se, but an air of fear in the well... air.

How is it now Steve, that Queen Brown announced all of her "bans"?? I went to the store this morning to get some perishable's, and a few other small items. After hearing of the "new orders" imposed on us minions, I decided to go back for a few more luxury items. Holy crap, them stores got cleaned out in 6 or so hours... :o
  • NeoBlackdogNeoBlackdog Member Posts: 17,277 ✭✭✭✭
Not quite that bad on this side of the hill, Toad, but a lot fewer items on the shelves than is the norm.  And TP?  HA!!  Forget that!!
TP shelves looked like they were licked clean.    My wife used to make fun of me for always having a buttload (pun intended!) of TP around but she's singin' a different tune now!
Queen Brown can still kiss my asterisk.  Gonna be a lot of people hurting pretty bad financially by the time this thing subsides.  I reckon we'll be seeing a significant uptick in burglaries and such.
I keep thinking about the old Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting times"  Looks like we're there!

Number three was asked by her friends if she was hurting for anything.  She said, naw, my mom had us prepping a long time ago.   Back in December kids and I along with some of their friends had long discussion about having a sense of something coming.  I gave them a list of things to keep stocked, instructions to get their bugouts packed and to keep their tanks topped for the trek to the woods should the need arise.  Number three told her hubbie if the SHTF while he as at work he would just have to come here in his vehicle by himself.  She wasn't waiting.  Lol.  I added 26 fruit trees to the ones I already have planted, and bought more chicks.  If the rain ever lets up I will get my garden planted.  I have two nucs of bees ordered and hives ready for occupation.  Ammo, fresh streams and isolation.  A country girl can survive (and support a small community since my four young 'uns will be heading this way with their families should the need arise).

It's the same here, all major grocery stores out of TP and other items, including chicken, beef, eggs and milk etc.  I live out ina rural area and fortunately most everything can still be had at Dollar General.  The wife went to Walmart yesterday, no eggs or hot dogs, so I stop at Dollar General and the cooler is full of eggs, hot dogs and sausage.   I suspect it's because us country folk already maintain a good supply due to being rural not running to the store on a daily basis.  All these folks that eat out everyday are in for a significant lifestyle change.

Here in OK they are imposing some measures such as schools closed until April 6th at least, concerts cancelled, etc. I think everyone is scared, but in a wait and see mentality. If the supply chain crumbles under the strain, that will be the next level of fear for everyone to panic. If/when the utilities like water and power go, then there will be mass hysteria. It is at this stage where I will start worrying.
Maybe we are already at stage 3. Many of the OK casinos have closed. In the 24 years I have lived here, that has NEVER happened. They remained open during the Murrah bombing and 14" snow storms (which the state is not set up to handle). 318 mph winds in a twister (which is 1mph from an unprecedented F6 tornado) only miles away. But, COVID-19 and mass panic got them to close.
