Why China and not India?

bpostbpost Member Posts: 32,664 ✭✭✭✭
Why are we tied to the COMMUNIST Peoples Party in China so deeply and yet ignore the largest Democracy on earth, India.  I know India is bureaucratic to the extreme but would it not better serve our Nation and other free peoples of the earth by doing a lot more in India and a lot less in China?  It does make one wonder what the scheme is behind the scene.  India has over one billion people and could easily do as much for America as China if the USA made more of an effort to support them.

Trump did go visit them month or two back, gotta wonder what they did talk about behind closed doors. there name did come up at one of his press meetings in the last few days, can't remember what it was over, but his response was basically we are working very closely with the indian gov't, and he speaks with the president? of india on regular basis.......   I do remember watching him and his wife after the tour of the Taj mahal, and he seemed well liked an welcomed by the crowds.

For many years, India was in the Soviet sphere of influence, and we saw China as a wedge against the Soviets. It's the same reason we ignored Egypt for many years, Nasser being a Soviet puppet, and backed the Shah of Iran- our puppet, who was anti communist. The Cold War is over, but its has left its mark on policy.

I get calls from India all the time.  They seem to think something is wrong with my computer and always offer to fix it.

If I recall correctly, we didn't have much going in favor of relations with China until president Nixon. As Mark noted, it was an opportunity then to further hedge against the Soviet regime of which India was allied and Nixon negotiated that with aplomb. India US relations have never been good. India didn't take too kindly to us warming up to the Pakistanis back in the early 50's and things have been rather tense with them since. That move was a questionable one, IMO, but again it was a move to hedge against the Soviets during the cold war. For the most part it worked, but why Pakistan (other than their willingness to negotiate with the US for arms to fight India) is somewhat of a mystery. Pakistan and India have not been good neighbors, though so that seems likely. As if to twist the knife in India's back (some might argue it was a stab to the front) Nixon backed Pakistan during their 1971 conflict with India (another dubious move given the horrible things the Pakistani militants did). That, of course, didn't help either if one is looking for India to be an ally. The thing is, India for its part seemed all too willing to bed up with the Axis powers during the cold war. They may be a democracy but either the Soviets had something over on them or they wanted Soviet style socialism... or they just hated the Pakistanis that much... which one we will likely never know for sure. Keep in mind though that a pure democracy is more like a a Stalinist style socialist country than most folks are willing to admit. Mob rule is a dangerous way to govern.

    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

We're "tied" to the Chinese because of the Demoncraps!!! Remember 40 years ago when Carter "normalized" relations with China.  Then remember when the Chinese tried to buy the Panama Canal and the port of San Diago from the Clintons?  Then there were those trips the Quid Pro Joe took to China with his son who made all sorts of unknown business deals while he was there.  Then there was the Chinese building islands in the south China sea to use as aircraft carriers while Obozo sat on his hands.  And before that there was Obozo doing nothing about the Chinese selling all sorts of techology to the terrorists in the middle east.  On and on and on.  The Democraps and the Chinese have been marching arm in arm for years!!!  It was probably a Demoncrap drivng that tank in Teimen Square in 1989 when old milk-toast Bush was president.

Don't blame Carter. It was Nixon. I thought this thread was going to be about the pandemic. I haven't heard anything about India.
