Why China and not India?

Why are we tied to the COMMUNIST Peoples Party in China so deeply and yet ignore the largest Democracy on earth, India. I know India is bureaucratic to the extreme but would it not better serve our Nation and other free peoples of the earth by doing a lot more in India and a lot less in China? It does make one wonder what the scheme is behind the scene. India has over one billion people and could easily do as much for America as China if the USA made more of an effort to support them.

If I recall correctly, we didn't have much going in favor of relations with China until president Nixon. As Mark noted, it was an opportunity then to further hedge against the Soviet regime of which India was allied and Nixon negotiated that with aplomb. India US relations have never been good. India didn't take too kindly to us warming up to the Pakistanis back in the early 50's and things have been rather tense with them since. That move was a questionable one, IMO, but again it was a move to hedge against the Soviets during the cold war. For the most part it worked, but why Pakistan (other than their willingness to negotiate with the US for arms to fight India) is somewhat of a mystery. Pakistan and India have not been good neighbors, though so that seems likely. As if to twist the knife in India's back (some might argue it was a stab to the front) Nixon backed Pakistan during their 1971 conflict with India (another dubious move given the horrible things the Pakistani militants did). That, of course, didn't help either if one is looking for India to be an ally. The thing is, India for its part seemed all too willing to bed up with the Axis powers during the cold war. They may be a democracy but either the Soviets had something over on them or they wanted Soviet style socialism... or they just hated the Pakistanis that much... which one we will likely never know for sure. Keep in mind though that a pure democracy is more like a a Stalinist style socialist country than most folks are willing to admit. Mob rule is a dangerous way to govern.

Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
