my wife just told me Trump announced he wanted every american to get money from the government with in two weeks and it would be a substantial amount more details to follow but I did read the stock market jumped over the news
remember the old song  " golden earring ? "I think did it  "money for nothing and chicks for free"  (  guess I just have to settle for the money  )

The actual mount is still in question: $850-1000 are the figure I've seen quoted. I seem to remember a similar handout back in 2008, but I made too much money (in whose opinion?) and didn't get a dime. I doubt I'll see a check this time around either. I do like being able to defer paying my federal taxes until July.

1K . WTH are they thinking? 1K will last people a week maybe? They have no way to determine who needs it so it goes to all!
I don't need it but of course I ain't going to refuse it unless refusing it buys me tax immunity for the debt it is going to expand. Seriously CEO people making a million plus going to get 1K ? Might stimulate the economy slightly or increase tp sales.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

I like the sound of that. I suspect that there will be "means test" and many of us won't get a penny, much less $1K. If I can't qualify for cash, I'd gladly settle for a $1,000 credit against this years taxes.

They need to double or triple the size of the new one dollar bills "Red Backs" with a collage pic of all the commie/nazi/socialist thugs on the front.  It will make good toilet paper from the gubernment.

I'll gladly pay you 100,000 next decade for a 1,000 today.

O.K. Everyone put on their thinking caps. What crisis can we have next year to keep that free government money coming? I seem to recall that people were upset about the $400 or so they got during the big recession turned out to be taxable. Does some unemployed welfare collector get this also? Doesn't seem to me their income is being affected by any business shut downs. Bob

I’m really conflicted about this.   While I’d love to get this free money, I’m well enough off and retired so that I can make my bills without a government handout.  But - my taxes won’t go down.  Why the hell are we giving tax payer money out.  They’re going to bankrupt the US.  But people need to eat and a place to live.
But the economy has been great for pretty much everyone.  why haven’t they thought about keeping a cushion for themselves?  they’ve got their brand new iPhone but their bank account is empty.

i don’t know.  I scrimped and saved - forgoing all kinds of * - and always made every purchase decision based on whether I could afford it in lean times.  rarely took a vacation.  Bought used vehicles.  Worked multiple jobs.  Now I sit here comfortably and see people depending on the government teat.  FMTT...

I'd forgotten about that. It was a big deal in California, to the point that people were going out of state and hauling old cars back and making them run just long enough to get the check. Once the carbon/pollution credits for taking old clunkers off the roads ended, the program came to a screeching halt.

I am sure many of us will get zip. I wonder how long before the handout will be built into future tax tables and those that got nothing will pay for those that got something. What my Uncle gives me he then takes away?

IIRC it was President Bush that gave us "free money" before to stimulate the economy.  Actually it was an advance on your tax refund, if you had one coming.  Forget how it worked for those that had to pay or those in no or low income brackets.  Maybe free for them.   Dems cried foul.

Remember  flying to D,C. to see the sites and stimulate the economy and maybe her too!

    He already gave me mine.

Bought 20K of an S&P index fund yesterday just before the close and sold $ 21,000.00 today just before the close.  The original 20K turned into $ 21,200 after the announcement.

In 24 hours there is an extra 1K in cash, plus an additional 200 in the fund.

Yes, it is free money, and it is not how I normally play.  But...if you can handle the risk, 5% - 10% swings almost daily are hard not to take advantage of.  Still way under for the year, of course, but every little bit helps on the way back.

Correct, the first stimulus was in 2008.  As Mark noted, a second stimulus occurred in 2009.

Well that ought to piss the democrats off. Giving away money that we don't have has been their idea for a long time and Trump is stealing their thunder. Maybe Trump will take Biden's advice from back in 2009 and spend our way out of debt.

Why not give everyone a million Dollars? That would solve all the problems if everyone was a millionaire. No more homeless, everyone could afford medical care & all the student debt could be paid off.  (Sorry I couldn't figure out how to get it to print in green.)

As presented, this money for all thing is a stupid idea.  There will be millions of us who remain unaffected by the panic, or are in a position where we should not be stealing from our grandchildren.  Hopefully we are means tested out of the give-away.

Anyone who does not lose their job or have their hours reduced should not be eligible, which obviously includes most government employees.
Anyone currently on public assistance and not working should not be eligible, as their financial condition will not be affected.
Anyone who was unemployed prior to the panic, and receiving unemployment insurance will not have their financial condition changed, and should not be eligible.
In short, the only people that should be eligible for this are those who's employment condition was negatively impacted by either the virus or government reaction to the virus.
Election years with a GOP President and the Dem Congress have to be the absolute conditions possible for fiscal responsibility.

Remembering way back when a thousand bucks seemed like big money (too me), these days.....meh......
Just a months supply of tacos.

Thinking about giving a grand to every US citizen, well now we are talking a lot of money here but IMO the price to our future generations having to make these big paybacks seems not worth a month of tacos!

You have to be working to get it.No retired families qualify if I read between the lines on this issue. No earnings this year then you might get nothing also. But hey you can get free lunches I bet!

It's like Davy Crockett's constituent told him, "It's not yours to give".

If they get the money by printing it, it just devalues our currency.  If they take tax money for this, they are socialists.

Wouldn't it be a kick in the nuts if Uncle Sam decided now is a great time to declare all cash potentially "infected" and needs to be destroyed. They could give everyone like a week to deposit it or else it is worthless. Imagine the drug dealers and others sitting on billions in unclaimed cash, no way could they launder it that quick.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Good call took some guts, I have a strong desire to go in with some dry powder I told the wife if it goes tits up we are no worse off than everyone else and if we only use a tenth of our dry powder we just wait longer to spend that hoping it recovers some day if it never does Oh well. I might pop on a tenth now and if it drops further go another 10th behind that.

Well on the flip side... just imagine when the banks go belly up and the govt. takes all the deposits and safety deposit boxes and claims them .  Just like bailing out all the companies now. Oh the complaining when GM Ford and Chrysler got money to stay open.
