I'm 35 miles from the epicenter, which was almost underneath the SLC airport. It was loud in Ogden and the whole house moved for 30 seconds. Dozens of aftershocks since then. No fatalities or injuries reported but lots of building damage, the airport is being evacuated and inbound flights diverted, 55,00 without power.

No damage or power out at my house. Ditto my daughter's place in SLC. More reports as it develops.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

That whole area was a spot for volcanic activity in the deep past. Dormant but not extinct.Who knows what is coming.

Just got off the phone with a nice woman from my health ins co. in SLC.
She's working from home today anyway (because of the wu-flu) but said the mormon tabernacle angel lost his trumpet in the quake.
Haven't seen a thing on the news, as of yet.
Stay safe Rocky and keep us updated on aftershocks.
    Arrivederci gigi

It was something of a miracle here behind the Zion Curtain. In 15 seconds, the Mormons became Quakers!

I don't have an accurate number on aftershocks, but they were reporting over 40 of them at noon, and say we may have hundreds over the next few weeks. Most of them too small to be felt, but not all.

5.2 just off the coast, west of Fortuna. Last couple of days small ones registering all over Northern Calif. That's a good thing, this rain for the last week seeps down into the faults and lets them slip a little at a time. Without it, it builds up to a big pop.

Sorry, It's Salt Lake City, which is in the state of Utah, which is one of the United States of America. That's located in North America. On Earth.

In that case, you know that Utah is not a foreign country, nor is it in a timewarp stuck in the 19th century. If only more people knew that...

With the "we're-all-going-to-die" news 24/7 the earthquake did not get  much air time, at least around here in the Midwest.  Did I hear correctly, no deaths and few if any injuries?
  • Rocky RaabRocky Raab Member Posts: 14,497 ✭✭✭✭
That's correct. Damage to brick buildings, and trailer homes, mostly. Not a single death and no serious injuries.
Our house shook, and it literally sounded like a train going by in the basement. About 15 seconds, which seemed a helluva lot longer! Then smaller aftershocks up to 4.3 over the next eight hours or so. They say we'll have them for weeks, most of them too small to feel. It was a branch of the huge Wasatch fault (atop which is my house) which is overdue for a big one by a thousand years. It's a vertical lift fault, the evidence of which is a nearly 1,000 foot cliff 200 yards from my house.
